Recent findings lend strong support to the theory that a black hole lies at the center of the Milky Way and of many of the 100 billion other galaxies estimated to exist in the universe.
A. that a black hole lies at the center of the Milky Way and of
B. that a black hole lies at the Milky Way's center and
C. that there is a black hole lying at the Milky Way's center and
D. of a black hole lying at the Milky Way's center and
E. of a black hole that lies at the center of the Milky Way and of

Here we need to use "THAT" as we are explaining what theory states.. So D,E are wrong
Since this is a universal truth it should be in simple tense...so C is gone..

Left with A and B....
B seems to be wrong but A looks awkward... which one is correct... please give the explanations for choosing answer between A and B as other choices are clearly eliminated... thanks....

A vs B -

we can drop B because possessive of inanimated noun is not prefred. When the choice is btn THE DOOR'S COLOR and COLOR OF THE DOOR, the later is prefrd.

IMO use of "OF MANY OF THE 100 BILLION OTHER GALAXIES" is ok (though appears awkward). Lets see how:

A black hole lies at the center of the Milky Way and of many of the 100 billion other galaxies. This can be written as :

A black hole lies at the center of the Milky Way and {A black hole lies at the center}of many of the 100 billion other galaxies [estimated to exist in the universe].

Theory supports 2 things:
1) A black hole lies at the center of the Milky Way and
2) A black hole lies at the center of many of the 100 billion other galaxies
Note the use of ESTIMATED TO EXIST IN THE UNIVERSE though appears as a verb phrase (predicate) is actually a modifier of UNIVERSE. Sentence intends to say that the 100 billion other galaxies are estimated to exist in the universe.

IMO A

The correct answer is A. This question clearly is the meaning question.
Thanks Patanjali for a wonderful explanation.

We definitely need the "of" at the end of the underlined portion, leaving us with A and E. In E, "theory of a black hole that lies" is more awkward than "theory that a black hole lies."
