"like that of gold" is not correct since Platinum is compared directly with Gold and not with any particular characteristic of the metal. B and E are eliminated

"demand in" is preferred here because "demand for" shifts the subject being discussed to Scientific research. Hence C is the answer.

First of all we don't need greater here. Greater than what?
The intended meaning of the sentence is -- the availability of platinum has decreased [as compared to earlier availability of platinum]

and the demand of platinum has increased in scientific research.

The second point is -- the demand of platinum has increased and not of scientific research.

So, we need "DEMAND IN" and NOT "DEMAND FOR"

Choose C, the best answer

I agree with you........now I remember the rule

demand for ----- it means something new is being asked for

demand in ----- it means the thing already exist and u require that thing to be put in

Only C & E uses demand in......
