GMAT 690 -- Where can I get in?

by iwkcutsr » Thu Nov 19, 2009 4:05 pm
Hello,

Please help me. I have a double major, one in Finance and the other in Mathematics, and I have a 4.0 GPA.

I took the GMAT once and got at 690 (47-Q, 38-V, 6.0AWA), which placed me in the 88th percentile.

I am our student government president, and I am the Chief Portfolio Manager of an Investment Fund we have on campus.

In addition to all of that, I pay my way through school by working 30+ hours a week. However, I've never had an Internship and I will be applying in January, as I graduate in May.

Which schools should I be shooting for? I am looking at both MBA programs and MS in Finance programs. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks.

Well, a little more background information would be helpful - but other than that, the key thing here is that the top MBA programs all look for people who have work experience, and it sounds like you're still in school. Is that the case? So if you're set on an MBA, you should think about working for a few years and then applying. That doesn't necessarily hold true for an MS degree. What are your career goals? You should have that thought through thoroughly, in order to determine what type of program would best fit your needs.

best,
Tasha

I said that that's not necessarily the case for an MS - that's because there are many Masters programs that aren't as stringent about work experience. Many people go for their Masters degrees straight out of undergrad - it depends on the school. It's best to do some research on specific schools you're interested in, to see what their requirements are. Again though, the WE for a Masters isn't an absolute.

Hi iwkcutsr,

I agree with Tasha. Most schools will need work experience (esp. for a degree in MBA). Again, if you want - you can get a degree in MS Finance and later decide to go for an MBA (if needed).

However, the most important thing is - why do you want a master's degree? Why do you want to go back to school rather than get some more work experience? You need to think through the process of MBA vs. MS Finance and the benefits. This depends on your short term and long term goals. Based on your long term goals, we can back-track to see what path you should be taking. It'll save you time, money and resources in the long run.

What year are you planning to apply? If you are planning for fall 2010 - you're close to second round deadlines. You need to do some thinking and get to your apps - ASAP!

If you are looking for further information on MS in Finance, I can help you with that. Can you break down your GMAT percentile including math and verbal? This will help me provide further information to you. Just email me directly, if you need further help. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Warm regards,
-S
