Assumption 1

by [email protected] » Mon Mar 19, 2012 8:47 pm
Recent research has indicated that married people are not only happier than unmarried people, but also healthier. This study has been widely reported by the media, with most commentators concluding that being married is good for one's health and attitude.

The conclusion of the media commentators depends on which of the following assumptions?

A] The longer the people are married, the happier and healthier they become.

B] Married couples who had a large, extravagant wedding are happier than those who had a small, simple ceremony.

C] Married people cannot get depressed.

D] Single people with depression or health problems are just as likely to get married as are other single people.

E] Some marriages are more harmonious than others.

The OA is D.

good assumption CR...

--> being married is good for one's health and attitude.

The conclusion of the media commentators depends on which of the following assumptions?

A] The longer the people are married, the happier and healthier they become.
--> irrelevant

B] Married couples who had a large, extravagant wedding are happier than those who had a small, simple ceremony.
--> out of scope

C] Married people cannot get depressed.
--> irrelevant

D] Single people with depression or health problems are just as likely to get married as are other single people.
--> correct, it removes the possibility of other way round, making the conclusion stand. Its basically cause and effect reasoning.
E] Some marriages are more harmonious than others.
--> irrelevant

comparing object difference comparing result
married people married happier&healthier
unmarried people unmarried less
When we do a comparision, we try to find the difference and make the different results to the difference. But one assumption is always needed in the comparision. It is that all other factors are the same to the comparing object.

Underneath is how I approach the question:
Conclusion: Being married is good for one's health and attitude
Assumption: which will help explain or be an example to be more healthy or happier after married.

(A) Conclusion need effect after married or not, not married for long or short
(B) This condition to have a happier marriage not to be married or not
(C) Too extreme (cannot)
(D) Still confused! Not sure marriage could help people with depression or health problems amiliate -> Contender
(E) This comparison doesn't help figure out the improvement of health or attitude after marriage

So I choose (D). Timed in 2:05 minute as I can't completely sure about (D).
Can peer explain more why (D) must be the answer ?
