Difficult GMAT Score Breakdown

by TXBorn » Mon Jan 05, 2009 10:50 am
I am in need of some professional advice.

I am about to turn in my applications to Stanford, Tuck, and Virginia. I took the GMAT and scored a 690, which I think puts me in the game at these schools. The problem is my score breakdown: 42V (95), 40Q (59), 6.0 AWA.

I have a 3.9 GPA from a masters civil engineering program at a top US school, and have earned A's in accounting, statistics, and calculus courses in undergrad. Do you think this will be enough to quiet any concerns about my GMAT score?

How should I approach this when submitting my application? I'm hoping this could work somewhat in my favor by showing that I am well-rounded (silver lining...).

Thank you!

Did something go wrong during the test while you were doing the quant?

The verbal is great!

Thank you!

I got stuck on several problems, and had trouble in general overthinking things.

I have submitted my apps. In my optional essay I admitted that my low quant score might be reason for concern but pointed out my high GPA and A's in calculus, statistics, and accounting.

I tried to spin it in a positive way to point out that my application, taken in whole, showed that I am strong in both areas.

I hope that will be enough! I struggled with whether or not to delay a year and try and bring up the quant score, but I spent so much time on my essays and applications, I just couldn't bring myself to do that.

What are your thoughts? I think the rest of my application is pretty strong.

Good luck TXBorn.

Let us know what happens when you hear back from the schools. :)

I think there is a good chance your transcript will outweigh that quant score. Under the circumstances, you handled it well and took the appropriate step by applying now. I hope you hear good news. If not, then you can retake and reapply.

Best,
Linda
