(1) |z - a | < |z - b |
(2) |y - a | < |z - b |
Imagine all the numbers a, y, z, and b on a number line. Now the questions is asking us whether a is more close to y than b is?

Statement 1: a is more close to z than b is.
Now y is between a and z. Hence, a is be more close to y than b.

Sufficient

Statement 2: a is more close to y than b is to z.
Now, distance between y and b = distance between y and z + distance between z and b > distance between y and z + distance between a and y > distance between a and y
Hence, a is be more close to y than b.

Sufficient

The correct answer is D.
