I got the correct answer by POE, because b,c,d,e were, to me, irrelevant to the passage. The only reason I chose a was because a pertained to the subject in the passage and the possibility of the subject saying "yes" to make theorist's conclusion false, rather than making it weaker.
Can anyone explain the conceptualization behind the passage in relation to correct answer?
