Levon has carrots, Brussel sprouts, and celery sticks in his refrigerator. What is the ratio of the number of carrots to the number of celery sticks?

(1) The number of carrots is 8/15 the number of Brussel sprouts
(2) The number of Brussel sprouts is three times the number of celery sticks.

Let the number of carrots = x
Let the number of Brussel sprouts = y
Let the number of celery sticks = z
Now, we want to find the ratio of carrots to the number of celery sticks.
i.e what is x:z?
Statement 1: The number of carrots is 8/15 the number of Brussel sprouts.
x = 8/15 of y = 8y / 15
x:z = 8y/15 : z
The value of z is unknown, hence, statement 1 is NOT SUFFICIENT.

Statement 2: The number of Brussel sprouts is three times the number of celery sticks.
y = 3 * z
z = y/3
Since the value of x is unknown, statement 2 is, therefore, NOT SUFFICIENT.

Combining both statements together:
From statement 1: x = 8y/15
From statement 2: z = y/3
$$x:z\ =\ \frac{x}{z}=\frac{\frac{8y}{15}}{\frac{y}{3}}$$
$$=\frac{8y}{15}\cdot\frac{3}{y}=\frac{8}{5}$$
x : z = 8 : 5.
Therefore, both statements combined together ARE SUFFICIENT.
