If x and y are integers, and 4x + 5y = 19, which of the following could be the value of x?

A. 1

B. 2

C. 3

D. 4

E. 5

The OA is the option A.

The way to solve this PS question is replacing the values in x? Is there another way to solve it?

Hi Vincen,

We're told that X and Y are integers, and 4X + 5Y = 19. We're asked which of the following COULD be the value of X.

This question is perfect for TESTing THE ANSWERS - one of those numbers MUST be a solution to the given equation (note: we're told that BOTH variables are INTEGERS, so when you TEST a value for X, the corresponding value of Y must also be an integer). When you plug-in a value of X and find the corresponding Y or plug in the Y and find the corresponding value for X, the equation is relatively "small", so it shouldn't take too long to do the basic arithmetic and find the solution.

Final Answer: A

If x = 1, then y = 3 will satisfy the equation 4x + 5y = 19.
