inequality question

x and y are both > 1. Is x a multiple of y?

(1) 3y^2 + 7y = x
(2) x^2-x is a multiple of y

I can see why 2 does not work, but why does one work?

1. works because you are adding two multiples of y and when you add two multiples of a number you get another multiple of that number which is equal to x in this case.
