143) List k consists of 12 consecutive integers. If -4 is the least integer in list K, what is the range of positive integers in list K?
a. 5
b. 6
c. 7
d. 11
e. 12


I answer 7, but its wrong. here is my explanation

set of 12 intergers = (-4, -3, -2, -1, 0 , 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)
Range (widest distance) = 7 - 0 = 7

Can someone help whats wrong with my reasoning?

Your list is correct.. However the range = |max - min| = |7 - (1)| = 6

Not sure why you subtracted 7 with 0.. 0 is not a positive integer..

Maybe its a silly question, but why do you minus 1? what 1 represents?

You're asked range of positive integers in the set...

+ve integers are integers > 0.

1 is the lowest +ve integer and 7 is the greatest in the set..

Therefore, range = 7-1 = 6

ie. in this probs

7-(-4)=11.

Yes you are...but it is asked to find the range of positive integers...

The answer is 7-1 = 6.

Consecutive integers are integers that follow each other in order. They have a difference of 1 between every two numbers. So, the list k = {-4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7}

Now we have to find the range of positive integers and range is the difference between the highest and lowest integers.
Here positive integers are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Note that 0 is not a positive integer.
So, the range of positive integers = 7 - 1 = 6

The correct answer is B.
