When solving inequalities involving ABSOLUTE VALUE, there are 2 things you need to know:
Rule #1: If |something| < k, then -k < something < k
Rule #2: If |something| > k, then EITHER something > k OR something < -k
Note: these rules assume that k is positive

GIVEN: |y - 1/2| < 11/2
Apply Rule #1 to get: -11/2 < y - 1/2 < 11/2
Multiply all parts by 2 to get: -11 < 2y - 1 < 11
Add 1 to all parts to get: -10 < 2y < 12
Divide all parts by 2 to get: -5 < y < 6
If y is BETWEEN -5 and 6, then the correct answer is C
