what is the value of y

In the fraction x/y, where x and y are positive integers, what is the value of y?

1) The least common denominator of x/y and 1/3 is 6?
2) x = 1

OA is E. I chose A thinking y needs to be 6. Not sure what is wrong there.

IMO E .

ST 1 : LCM of y and 3 = 6
So y can either be 2 or 6 ==== > INSUFF

ST 2 : x=1
No info about y ====> INSUFF

ST1 + ST2 ====> It can be 1/2 or 1/6 ===== > INSUFF
Thanks & Regards,

x,y (integers) >0, find y-?

st(1) x/y and 1/3 have least common denominator (LCD) OR We must ascertain the lowest common multiplier (LCM) for y and 3 --> depending on y LCM can be anything- hence Not Sufficient;

We cannot choose LCM and LCD for y and 3 as 6 because y could be 9 then LCD=9; y could be 11 then LCD=33 ...

st(2) x=1 This information is irrelevant for our solution, as we need to know y Not Sufficient;

Combined st(1&2): Not Sufficient, as we operate mainly with the only relevant condition in st(1) and this is not enough to answer this question.

answer E
