Rembrandt so treasured his collection of Islamic portraits that when forced to sell them in order to raise money, he first made copies of more than twenty.
(A) he first made copies of more than twenty
(B) first he made copies of more than twenty
(C) more than twenty were copied
(D) copies of more than twenty were made
(E) he copies more than twenty of them first

The correct answer is
A, why not B?
Wow that's real close a call between A and B. Only reason I see is that first modifies the verb made and not the noun first. With B, this is clearer.

Do you agree?
Vineesh,
Just telling you what I know and think. I am not the expert. :)

IMO A
The sentence talks about cause and effect. first part, before comma, talks abt the cause and second part, after comma, talks about the effect.

The non underlined part is in active voice, so the underlined must also be in active voice. So, C and D are incorrect.

In A, B and E, the position of "first" is not stable.

In A "first" is next to verb "made", in B "first" is next to pronoun "he", and in E "first" is at the last. The placement of "first" in B and E changes the meaning.

I havent understood this one

1) Did he made 20 replicas of each painting(art)
2) Did he made replicas for the first 20 paintings he had (out of a total ..say 100)

The word twenty has no proper reference...according to me
First take: 640 (50M, 27V) - RC needs 300% improvement
Second take: coming soon..
Regards,
HSPA.

I believe A.

When he was forced to do something, the first action is making the copies. Thus first modifies the verb "made".
