Let x = the number of minutes before noon.
If we go back 16 minutes, the number of minutes after 9am = 3x.
Plotted on a number line:
9am<-----3x minutes after 9am-----><-----16 min-----><----x minutes before noon----->
12 noon
Since the total number of minutes between 9am and 12pm = 180, we get:
3x + 16 + x = 180
x = 41.
Thus, it is 41 minutes before noon.
