The resents of the University of California system have recently acted on plans to add two new Universities, which increases to ten the number of U.C. schools.

B. Universities which increase the number to ten
C. Universities, increasing to ten the number
D. Universities, a plan which will have increased to ten the number
E. Universities, to increase to ten the number.

C. Universities, increasing to ten the number ; process of adding the universiting and increament of the number is happening together

therefore C
Its better to burn out than to fade away

IMO C

The resents of the University of California system have recently acted on plans to add two new Universities, which increases to ten the number of U.C. schools.
A. Universities, which increases to ten --- which wrongly modifies to Universities
B. Universities which increase the number to ten --- which wrongly modifies to Universities
C. Universities, increasing to ten the number --- increasing correctly refers to the plan
D. Universities, a plan which will have increased to ten the number --- will have increase is worng verb tense we need to describe a possibility in the past
E. Universities, to increase to ten the number --- to increase is wrong way to open a prepositional phrase

i think its B.
I have some diff. opinion on some statements..
A. Universities, which increases to ten --- which wrongly modifies to Universities
B. Universities which increase the number to ten -- it makes sense when u put it in the question statement.
C. Universities, increasing to ten the number --- doesn't make any sense if u put it back in the original statement.
D. Universities, a plan which will have increased to ten the number --- will have increase is worng verb tense we need to describe a possibility in the past
E. Universities, to increase to ten the number --- to increase is wrong way to open a prepositional phrase

Please post the OA..

C. Universities, increasing to ten the number --- This is correct.
D. Universities, a plan which will have increased to ten the number --- will have increase is worng verb tense we need to describe a possibility in the past
E. Universities, to increase to ten the number --- to increase is wrong way to open a prepositional phrase.. moreover its a run-on sentence.

It's not the newly added universities that are increasing the number, but rather it's the addition of the universities that is increasing the number. Hence, A and B are ruled out. D is really awkward. Infinitive form can't act as a qualifier, so ruled out E. Left with C, which shows that the increase in the number is happening because of the addition.

Please always post the OA in your question. I would go with B. It sounds more idiomatic to me. I'll wait for the asnwer and better explanation.

IMO B. The relative pronoun 'which' clearly references the 2 new Universities that are added that caused the number to go up.

there are too many problems with B. Firstly, reference to "the number" is ambigious. Secondly, "ten of UC schools ... what??" Finally, "the number" is singular, so the verb should be "increases" not "increase".

C is correct.

There is no idiom like increases to, for anyone who said that B is idiomatic and hence correct.

B does not sound like a complete sentence

"which increase the number to ten U.C. schools"
