It was anomalies in the orbit of Uranus that led to the discovery of Neptune.

(a) It was anomalies in the orbit of Uranus that
(b) It was the orbit of Uranus showing anomalies that
(c) They were anomalies in the orbit of Uranus that
(d) The orbit of Uranus being anomalous was what
(e) The anomalies in the orbit of Uranus was what

i think anomalies is plural subject A) cannot be the answer so i chose d)
K800 explanation says d) is unidiomatic construction

can someone help??

A for me too... anomalies in the orbit is singular and when It is used as stating of a sentence then it will be a 3rd person singular..

hence A
D uses being ,..ruled out

Excuse me friends i chose option C) instead of d)

It was anomalies in the orbit of Uranus that led to the discovery of Neptune.

(b) It was the orbit of Uranus showing anomalies that
(c) They were anomalies in the orbit of Uranus that
(d) The orbit of Uranus being anomalous was what
(e) The anomalies in the orbit of Uranus was what

K800 explanation says c) is unidiomatic.

IMO B

After first round of elimination, I had A/B left. As I compare A with B, I have noticed the subtle difference btwn the two choices- the subject before that. I believe that the original passage is stating that anomalies caused the discovery, instead of Uranus.

I might be wrong. OA plz.

It was anomalies in the orbit of Uranus that led to the discovery of Neptune.

(a) It was anomalies in the orbit of Uranus that
(b) It was the orbit of Uranus showing anomalies that – passive can be avoided
(c) They were anomalies in the orbit of Uranus that – can be ruled out
(d) The orbit of Uranus being anomalous was what – can be ruled out
(e) The anomalies in the orbit of Uranus was what –
It is a toss up between A & E

I would preferably go with A {that preferred over what}

what is OA though
Regards

Should be A. It seems to be the best option.

Lemme try and explain the use of was here,

Read it like this, Fact: Anomalies in the orbit of Uranus.
It was the fact that led to........

Hi @reachac

Going by your explaination, E should also be correct

The FACT was what led to ........

Please explain, what's wrong with E? Is it the use of WAS...due to which E is incorrect ?
