Generally this is best when the equations are too big and solving to the answer would take a long time.

It also works in Data sufficiency if you see that you cnanot mathematically solve it, then you can plug in numbers to see if the number possibilites take you to a definite answer of Yes/no in DS.

I think there is a post on this somewhere. Let me search. Will try to reply with it.
