GMATPrep Accuracy?

I am curious about the accuracy of the GMATPrep practice tests.

I just took the first one and was given a score of 740 with a breakdown of Q 49 V 43. This is despite answering 23 questions correctly and 15 incorrectly in the Quant section (and not all of the incorrect questions were at the end).

Has anyone else experienced a result like this? How strong an indicator is the GMATPrep score?

GMATPrep is the most accurate indicator of your actual GMAT performance. A 740 on this test is a really great performance!

Take some time searching for old posts in this forum--there have been a few threads like this where people have encountered your exact situation of receiving a high score with a lot of mistakes.

Before you go into the real test, make sure you understand the basics of how the test is scored - it isn't about your percentage correct (or incorrect), it's about the difficulty level of the questions you answer. Expect the # incorrect to remain high, no matter what your score is.

Also, the official GMAT has a standard deviation of 29; GMATPrep's standard deviation is not public but can be expected to be worse (that is larger) than that of the official GMAT. If you had gotten that 740 on an official test, this means you would have a 2/3 chance of scoring within 29 points (that is, between 711 and 769) and a 1/3 chance of scoring outside of that range (either lower or higher) if you took it again.

As you can see, the standard deviation of the official test is pretty high already - and all practice tests (even the "official practice" tests) will be less precise than the real thing.

I am currently seeking advice on this same topic. I will be sitting for the exam one week from today (Aug 24, 2010) I am topping out at about 670 on the MGMAT and about 730 on the GMATprep (including really sketchy AWAs) does anyone have any comments on whether or not I can feel fairly confident in reaching the 700 mark on the real deal? I will be happy with 700+ but I can not afford anything less to get into the PhD programs I am aiming for. I will be able to offer my advice in one week and hopefully it will be good news.

GMAT Prep is the right indicator thats what I have heard, but your score on actual gmat will be +/-30 of GMATPrep.

I agree that GMATPrep tends to be the best indicator - and, yes, the standard deviation is 30 points (+/-30).

This assumes that the tests were taken under official testing conditions, of course. If you deviated from official conditions (skipping essays completely, taking longer breaks than allowed, etc), your scores could be inflated.
