(B) In 1905, Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly, traveling the back roads of Hungary, began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, and they were only armed
(C) In 1905 Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, traveling the back roads of Hungary armed only
(D) Having traveled the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology; they were only armed

Traveling the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, and they were armed only with an Edison phonograph and insatiable curiosity.

(A) Traveling the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, and they were armed only

"Traveling the back roads of Hungary" incorrectly refers to "in 1905"

(B) In 1905, Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly, traveling the back roads of Hungary, began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, and they were only armed

"traveling ..... " is a comma+Ving modifier and it is incorrectly used.

(C) In 1905 Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, traveling the back roads of Hungary armed only

"traveling .... " is a comma+Ving modifier and I believe that it is correct.

(D) Having traveled the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology; they were only armed

"Having traveled the back roads of Hungary" incorrectly refers to "in 1905"

(E) Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly, in 1905 began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, traveling the back roads of Hungary, arming themselves only

If I consider "in 1905 began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology" a sub-clause, then "Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly traveling ..... " is incorrect.
If I consider "traveling ..... " a comma+Ving modifier then this wrong.

Akhilesh is correct in explainining all the answers, except B.

The main difference between B & C is 'Armed only' and 'only Armed'
The meaning in C is what sentence intend to say. i.e I am armed only with X Not with any other tools\things.
While in B: I am only armed with X Not anything Not armless or...

Also the positioning of 2 modifiers in back to back is less preferable as explained Stacey earlier.

B is not only awkward and messy (so many modifier)

BUT ALSO

First half sentence is in active voive and other half is in passive voice....

IMO C

In 1905 Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology,
1) traveling the back roads of Hungary
2) armed only with an Edison phonograph and insatiable curiosity.

Here 1. seems to modify began & 2. seems to modify Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly. However, there is no COMMA OR AND between these two phrases.Furthermore how can armed... modify the subject of the previous clause Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly....Please help me understand it thanks

A and D have wrong usage of modifiers and they do not seem to be refering to the correct "subjects" they want to modify.E is a right away reject for me as it has misplaced modifiers.
B does not have a parallel construction.( See the parts before and after and). C has correct modifiers and is coherent in its construct.
