Not A) because of "when most Americans perceived the U.S.S.R. like a constant threat. " : perceive something like something is incorrect.

E) the sales of the spy novel was the result of the tensions during cold war not the novel itself.

IMO E because:
"regarded as" is the correct idiom and not regarded to be
so A and B are gone
c)"U.S.S.R. like a constant threat. "is wrong.It should be"U.S.S.R. as a constant threat. "

D)changes the meaning.

The powers of two are bloody impolite!!

what analysts are attributing to .. ? sales of spy novel, the novel itself, or something else ...

IMO B.
A fails because of improper idiom usage perceive... like instead of perceive.. to
E fails because of improper modifier
sales of the spy novel were not regarded by analysts. It was the spy novel that was regarded by analysts.

C & D are not right for obvious reasons of awkward constructions.

Regarded as is the correct idiom, so A and B are gone.
C Awkward construction to it's best
Between E and D, initially i picked D, but i suppose e is the right construction. In D, spy novel was not the result of tensions during cold war, but the sales, which reached their zenith

E is perfectly fine

but reference in "e" towards sale is much better..
