Yes you are right. OG problems give you the standard you match up against on test day. The problems here on the forum are usually the ones most get wrong when preparing and hence more often than not help you hone your skills.

For starters, I just used to focus on expert answered questions to make sure that the questions were reliable and of GMAT standard. As I spent time on the forum I could start picking out which questions would fall out of the GMAT format and then not focus on them at all.

If these questions are DS questions pay attention to them. As I have mentioned make sure each option individually is tried out. With silly mistakes they are hard to address. You either make them or you don't. I have found though that the odd question you do get wrong does not pull down your score drastically. Try to see what went wrong in the other questions. 2-3 questions alone will not pull down quant to 46.

I used an old version of Manhattan SC handed down to me. Frankly it should not matter. They all give you a set of rules to go by. I ordered the latest version of CR mostly so I could access the 6 Manhattan GMAT Online Tests.

If you have recently purchased or are planning to purchase one of the Manhattan GMAT Study Guides, you get the 6 Tests free. In order to access them you will have to follow the instructions on the book. The study guide should be an original Manhattan guide, not a ripped off or photocopied one.

Barring that I think you may be able to buy them online but I am not totally sure.

I am facing the decision on when to take the GMATPrep. Would you please share some thoughts on the goals for taking GMATPrep1 and GMATPrep1, respectively?

In addition, I noticed that most people took the 2nd one in the last few days. That makes sense and is what I am planing to do, but I wonder what if my GMATPrep 2 is far from my target score, and only several days to go? My current scores on CAT fluctuate a lot, not sure whether this is because of my testing skills, not solid in some concepts, lucks/bad lucks, unsound review plan, etc.

Yeah the decision to when to take the GMAT Prep Tests is one that had me stumped for a while. I suggest take the GMAT Prep Test on the weekend before D-day. In that case if you feel that you are off your score you can retake the tests. The GMAT Prep have questions from a pool and not all of them will be recycled.

Fluctutation in scores can be due to a number of reasons - in my case it used to be loss of focus

Giving a number of practice tests will help build test temperament. Also when giving the tests make sure you attempt the AWA section with the tests. I also took the allotted breaks on the test day as well on my prep tests. This helped me regather my thoughts and refocus on the sections alone and not the GMAT as a whole.

Hi abhi84v - Congratulations! It is impressive to see how you raised your verbal score from a mere 29 to a 45. I possess a background similar to yours i.e. engineering and I am struggling with Verbal for quite sometime now.

I have two questions for you:

a. Is practicing the right strategy or learning the appropriate strategy from books, such as MGMAT, etc. the efficient way to improve the Verbal score?
b. What helped you in CR more, the Powerscore bible or the MGMAT strategy guide?

Effective practice needs to cover two points: Quality and quantity

I would suggest pick a standard guide from a reputable GMAT Prep company and see if the strategy suits you. I had been through at least three study guides before a strategy suited me. For example in CR questions some guides recommend reading the question stem at the end whereas others recommend reading it first. I personally found that reading the question stem first was more suitable to me. Once you have determined that and are happy with it, I suggest focus on practising good quality questions. Books like Kaplan, Manhattan and the OG are good practice. So also are many of the questions that appear on this forum.

I think Powerscore helped me in formulating a strategy. But there were not too many practice questons. This is where I relied on MGMAT.

After I got 710 I practised for nearly 6 weeks before my next test. The practise was reviewing all the OG questions in OG11, OG12, and going over all the other prep material. I checked to see if I was still making the same mistakes. Then I would go through a lot of questions on this forum and see if I could get the OA straight away. If not I would analyse reasons for my mistakes. In the end this period was more analysis then test taking as the test temperament was more or less built up.
