Tried hard but failed... score 610

by druxus » Tue Sep 01, 2009 1:43 am
Hello out there!
Took GMAT yesterday, expected 650-700 but scored 610 and leaved the testing room in an appalling mood.

Scored Q35 V40.
Quant part was a nightmare - I got exactly thoose problems that I'am worst at - coordinate geometry and number properties... Math was MUCH harder than in the official guide.

Verbal part wasn't that hard texts were quite easy, sentence correction and critical reasoning - OK. Scored 40, maybe could score more if I weren't so exhausted after quant.

The problem is - wether it is possible to improve math to 40-45 in month and a half? Or I shouldn't even try...

OMG ! it's like you took the words right out of my mouth. I did the GMAT yesterday. Got 610 as well.

I was totally knocked over by quants (got 35). The qts were much harder than those in OG 11th edition or GmatPrep (and to some extent I just plained panicked after a few curve-ball qts). I had done tests from Princeton Review, 800score, Kaplan and finally the 2 GmatPrep ones. I averaged around 38 - 40 in verbal (didn't change much over my entire prep time). But I started out pretty low in quants. From the first PR tests of around 33 - 35, to finally averaging around 42 - 46 in the GMATprep.

Verbal went somewhat as expected (38) yesterday. No complaints here...though I knew i screwed up quants and that weighed in quite a bit on my mind while doing verbal section. I wasted quite a bit of time on the first 5 questions over-analysing them...and finally had to just hit anything on the last 3. Whereas in the mock tests, I'd usually have around 5 mins to spare.

I had like 3 qts on coordinate geometry which i had only have an idea on how to go about solving them. Also got 2 questions on number line properties.. solvable...but pretty lenghty if you take the plug-in approach. The quant section was pretty much a blur for me after the first 10 qts.

Needless to say I was sulking all of last evening after thinking about all that effort over the last few months. Which led me to check up blogs/forums to find out what a person in my predicament can do to better quants score next time round.

Glad to see someone mentioning the problem I face (most seem to have a diametrically opposite problem to us). I'm going to relax a bit for the next couple of weeks and then will pick up the practice again for an attempt in November. I'd love to know how you get along. I'm open to any advice cause I really don't know what to do now

Same story here!

Did not know what was happening in Quants section. I think I was fairly well prepared, but bombed it. It was SO tough! It was my second attempt. Had taken GMAT last year as well, without any preparation at all and had scored 600. It was in the US though and the test was FAR simpler that what it was here in India! In Q the score is 42 which is not what I expected. The way I had done it, I was sure I won't even score 500!

What exactlt happened, I still don't know!

Guys,

Do you have the Manhattan Geometry book? I would freeze as a deer seeing headlights would whenever I encountered coordinate geometry but since I copped that book, I've been able to tell coordinate geometry that "I'm its daddy".

Since we are all trying to go to business school, I think we should recognize the the lesson from my paragraph above - I just marketed and advertised for MGMAT and I'm not invested in them nor am I an employee.

The lesson is this: CREATE AN AWESOME PRODUCT AND IT WILL SELL ITSELF!!
Get the Manhattan books, retake the tests, come back and tell us how you sonned the GMAT

Could you guys, plz tell me how long does it take to prepare for the GMAT? How many hours per day do usually spend to it? I just started, I began from the Quantative Section. I'm obsessed on GMAT,sounds crazy, I can spend all my day, but can't get high results on problem solving part,if my start up doesn't go the way I wish what will be after(I mean in other sections)

Narmin,

First step either
1. Take a diagnostic test from Manhattan GMAT (it is free) or
2. Take the 1st GMAT Prep test from mba.com

Your results will let you know how well you stand. GMAT prep is not a "one size fits all" thing. Some people only study for 2 weeks or fewer and get a 760. Some study for 6 months and get a 760.

Know yourself and do what you need to do to get the score you want.

I'am going to retake GMAT on October 18.
Right now I'am studying math section 1-2 hours a day. While at the same time try not loose my skills in verbal part.
Hope I'll get >680 on a second try, or my application will be at serious risk :)

p.s. I think I know what has happened on the first try, I've made to many mistakes on the first 10 questions and that ruined my quant section after all

GMAT Score:640

same boat

by thexravenx » Sat Sep 19, 2009 9:56 am
In fact 3 people from my prep course are in the same exact boat. I had 4 questions on XY-planes, very few on number properties, algebra, or even geometry for that matter.

Each person in my course scored a 640, when we all were hitting above 700 on our practice exams. I am going to use the quant focus and take a look at the Manhattan books.

My rundowns:
800Score: 650 V44 Q35
GMAT Paper #24: 650 V45 Q33
MGMAT: 680 V39 Q43
MGMAT: 610 V38 Q35
MGMAT: 650 V43 Q37
MGMAT: 670 V42 Q39
MGMAT: 700 V41 Q43

1st Round: 640 V40 Q38
