Just wanted to report that I took my GMAT today and got a 680 (47Q, 35V), a twenty point improvement from my first attempt, which took place two long years ago! While I am not thrilled with my score, I think that this is as good as its going to get for me and I am at peace with the decision to close, seal off, and throw out the GMAT chapter of my life for good! I am officially DONE.
Anyway, I wanted to come on here not to share my gmat prep (it wasn't anything extraordinary by any means) but to remind people to not let their GMAT scores hold them back from applying at their dream schools. GMAT is NOT everything.
Two years ago, I took my first GMAT exam and scored a 660, which, at the time, was in the bottom of the 80% GMAT range of top schools. But, despite the fact that I had a unique background and really wanted to apply, I was so crippled with fear of rejection that I never did. Each year would go by and I would say, this will be the year I will apply! But it never happened. Then I met my husband, a Columbia Business School alumni, who really boosted my confidence, recounted stories of so many of his classmates who had below 700 gmat scores (many of whom I've met), and couldn't stress enough the importance of the application over the GMAT. So I decided to give the GMAT one final shot. I told myself, worse case scenario, it will show to the AdCom that I was motivated enough to give the gmat another try. And ironically enough, I got 680, which is currently considered to be in the bottom of the 80% GMAT range cited by top b-school website! How bizarre indeed.
But I just wanted to share that and remind people NOT to do the same mistake I did and wait off on applying just because of a "below average" GMAT score. Stay confident and just give it a shot! You may be surprised with the response
And in case anyone is interested, I will apply R1 to the Lauder Institute, Columbia, Harvard, and London Business School. I will check back in and let you know of my progress.
