Just Didnot beat the GMAT 590 to 570

by rajibgmat » Mon Dec 22, 2008 8:29 am
Guys,

I appeared for GMAT on July 26th 2008 after studying for 2-3 months and managed to score 590 Q49, V23. AWA 4.0. Verbal was always my weakness and Quanta my strength. Anyways hearbroken I took almost a month's break and resumed my studies in Sep.

Studying religiously for 2-3 hours and 4-5 hrs in the weekend, I was progressing really well. I observed that my SC and CR were improving gradually. The books I believed helped me a lot were as follows:-

1) PowerScore Bible CR
2) PowerScore Bible SC
3) Manhattan SC

I also took the Veritas weekend course, but I found it worthless. May be people will differ with me.

I took various CATs from

1) 800Score
2) Princeton (good)
3) CrackTheGMAT
4) Veritas
5) Thomson ARCO
6) GMATPrep (Definitely the closest to real)
7) ManHattan (Next closest....good questions)

My test date was 20th Dec 2008'. I was super confident for two reasons.

First, I bought the Manhattan's SC third edition, just a week back before the exam, to get access to its CAT. All the CATs were great. I managed to appear for first 4 CATs and scored as follows :-

Manhattan CAT score

CAT # 1 690
CAT # 2 690
CAT # 3 670
CAT # 4 680
CAT # 5
CAT # 6

Next thing, I observed that the mba.com site changed completely in look and feel, so I downloaded the GMATPrep once again from the site. I took GMATPrep in consecutive days and scored 680 and 720 respectively in the two sets. Interestingly, I observed a lot of new questions in both the sets.

Whole night, I couldnot manage to get a good sleep may be because of anxiety or may be because I slept for a hour and a half in afternoon. My apointment was at 12:15 PM, but started lot earlier as it snowed heavily a day ahead and I don't wanted to get stuck. I have to struggle for 15-20 minutes to clean my car and then take it out of the driveway as the car was not moving ahead because of ice formation. I took help of my wife and few people to get out somehow, I reached the test centre, way before the scheduled time.

I completed all the formalities, including taking the photograph with a big cheese (its called 800 smile). Environment and coordinator both were very friendly. A lot of other guys also came for GMAT the same day, so it made me lot comfortable.

AWA.....no surprises.....super fine...should score 5.0
Quanta (no surpises...pattern and difficulty level...same as GMATPrep..completed on time....made guess in 2-3 questions to maintain the time)
Verbal ( my weakness...started with 3 SCs..then few CRs and RC. I got 4 RC passage( 3 in the beginning and 4th one in late 20s)...all of them were so cute and innocent that I answered them like I knew them from my birth. Again, finished it on time.

I was more than confident to score 700+, at least near 690, but gotcha...I scored a dismal 570..unbelievable....man....simply unbelievable. I was already exhausted after the exam and on the top, this score literally killed me. From that day to the moment, I am writing this long boring story I am not able to forget my experience. Nothing to learn from my story.

I spoke to my wife and she just couldnot believe it. She was thinking that I was joking which is my second nature. After convincing her that I am not lying about my score, she advised me to go them and file a concern, which I did promptly. I reported to the coordinator that I am not satisfied wit my score and want it to be re-evaluated. She filed a case with GMAC and provided me a case ID. I am still waiting to hear from them.

Good luck to future aspirants. Write me if you think we can of mutual help or can simply write me.

Last but not the least, I shopped a lot to get out of the frustrations (but didnot drink, didnot smoke, didnot fucked a whore...which I never did and will never do whatever I may have to get through). My wife's kind word also helped me a lot; in fact she is my best source of console. So guys, I want to declare that I am not out of the race. I will come back after a month, as I am travelling to India. After that I will restart the battle.......Till then fight it for me. Don't give up. Your success and failure stiry will lift up guys like me and million others.

Rajib....the invincible.

dude,

unfortunately as far as i know, they regrade only for AWAs, so i highly doubt that your case will see the light of day.

gear up and take it one last time as you have planned, since schools consider 3 strikes max so you have one strike left.

wow...i feel your pain...i was super confident going into my previous exam with all the prep i could possibly have done and with practice scores ranging similar to yours...and on the real test, walked out with a low score 530. i thought about asking for re-eval b/c i just couldn't figure out what went wrong. i just figured i would retake it one more time and if i see the same result, i might have to file for re-eval like u did. don't give up! :)

i STRONGLY doubt they will re-evaluate it...its a computer that marks it ..either RIGHT or WRONG...it is not rocket science...

instead of hoping for this...i would suggest you re-study and take it one more time since you obviously score well on ur practice tests...

its probably pressure and nothing else...

i also scored a 530 the first time and was thinking of filing a complaint..but then realized i would be wasting my time and could be more productive studying....plan to re-take in FEB....

Dude,

Ok agreed, its not a rocket science, but being in IT for last 7 years, I know some bugs can exist in a system for ages drawing anybody's attention. No system is foolproof. Who knows nobody ever raised a question, then how can you be sure that the system is OK? Isn't it a mere assumption ?

Secondly, its not a court case, in which I have to spend a lot of time arguing or defending myself. I felt cheated so I reported the incidence. I did my part and I feel satisfied doing so, irrespective of the outcome. Now, I am gonna put my 100% for the next retake, as you said. My point is that both the cases are mutually exclusive, none is gonna affect each other. You feel it, just do it. GMAC is no GOD.

Thanks for the corcern though.

Rajib the confident.

Rajib,
I understand how frustrating it can be when u put in the yards but dont get the distance.

For your satisfaction it is ok that u filed the complaint. Anyways good luck and my best wishes for a successful third attempt in breaking the 700 barrier.

Enjoy your trip to India (will give u some time off) and then try to conquer the GMAT.

Few questions:

Did u feel like u were rushing in to answer choices quickly?Did u take the time to double check to make sure u were not lured in to a decoy/trap answer choice? From your debrief it looks like u just had to guess on 3 -4 question which is not bad at all, a vast majority do.

Again good luck! GMAT is not for the faint hearted and you dont seem to be one.

Regards,
Cramya

Hi Cramya,

Thanks for your kind words. I would like to answer our questions.
No, I didnot rush, but yes when I did rechecked few smart questions(seemingly easier ones) and found that I was wrong in few of them. For first 10-15 questions, I definitely took more time than required. One area where I literally rushed was Reading comprehension.

Hi Rajib...

Don't let your emotions rule your ambitions... I have given it 3 times already and can empathise with your pain...I am still on the look for my satisfactory score.... anyway... I think your pain area might be reading comprehension. I think in many cases substantially brings down your verbal.. reason? chances are that you go wrong on consecutive questions I had seen these on my GMATPREPS where I did wonderfully on SC, and CR, I messed up 2 CR's during first 15 questions, and for two passages I did 2 consecutive mistakes, so all in all, total 6-7 mistakes still the verbal score given to me was 28 :(

Did you take notes during your RC? try doing RC in a stressful scenario... say 12.30 am when you are feeling extremely sleepy and are stressed by the day's work and see how you do, often it becomes very difficult to comprehend simple english when you are stressed. I have seen this as an important factor affecting my CR and RC... The actual stress levels are way different for some people during an actual exam than during a mock-up. These people include me... symptoms are... excessive sweating, reduced attention span, reduced ability to concentrate, time hysteria... (you might feel time is flying too fast or too slow sometimes)

Take a long break and give it one more shot... don't set too many expectations from yourself.

There was time during my third test when I saw my score, I said to the GMAT blue screen... this is the time you become my ultimate pursuit... and I will not give you up... Not without a fight...

Regarding GMAC algorithm... I think you are right... I am almost certain there will be bugs there... and who knows when they come to haunt us... sometimes you can't explain someone so good in english getting hurt time after another on GMAT verbal... But I think it is tricky, and that's what differentiates those who score well from others...

Anyway... Go after the beast... and take it easy...

Rajib, Whats the break up of verbal and quant?

As far as filing the complaint or case, I personally think its good that you did. At least it takes weight off your mind. Plus, it may be possible that scores get revised or it remain the same, either way you have nothing to lose.

All the best.

Hey Abhi..

Thanks for your concern man.

I followed whatever is recommended. You will not believe, since I scheduled my exam at 12:15PM, I tried taking all the trial tests during that time precisely....and took breaks(as allowed) for not more than 5 minutes. Regarding stress level, I do agree that sometimes it is not easy to handle, but let me tell you, I have no such problems. I was in absolute control of my myself on the test day. In fact, I thought this is my day and I will definitely cross 700 mark.

Now my biggest problem is that I don't know where I went wrong ? Who is gonna tell me what are my weaknesses ? Thats why I wanna double check whether the system is faulty or I really screwed up ?

Wish you all the best man. See you in Harvard
