Hi Guys,
took the monster on the 7th of August and scored 770 (99 percentile)
I am more than happy with the score, although I would have traded a lower score for higher quant, considering I am from the Indian demographic, which is renowned for high quant scores of 50/51 ( I am not sure if SC would allow such a sentence).
Here are a few key points that I learned from the entire experience. I will be here to answer any particular questions that you might have.
1. Prep Test: GMAT Prep is the best, everything else is useless! Kaplan is totally hopeless. MGMAT might be good in terms of score prediction (although I disagree with that as well), but since it does not test on concepts and difficulty level encountered in the real gig, I term it as useless.
My Test History:
Date Test Score Quant Verbal
11-May Kaplan 1 580 39 31
13-Jul Powerprep 750 50 43
14-Jul M1 680 47 36
16-Jul Kaplan 1 590 38 33
18-Jul GMAT Prep 1@1 770 49 48
19-Jul GMAT Prep 1@2 730 49 41
26-Jul GMAT Prep 2@1 740 50 40
1-Aug GMAT Prep 2@2 760 50 41
7-Aug GMAT 770 49 47
You can see how closely GMAT Prep and Powerprep mimicked my real scores.
2. Test Prep Duration and Time: I had initially planned to study over a period of 7-8 months and take the GMAT early next year. This is a strategy I employed for the GRE 5 years back and it served me realy well ( I scored 1510/1600) on that. However, due to certain dynamics at work I had to replan my MBA goal. I started my prep on 18th May and took the test on the 7th of August. I studied for 3 hours on the weekdays (took Friday off) and 6-7 hours on weekends.
3. Test Study Strategy: I had initially planned on studying one quant topic and one verbal topic daily. In the first week itself I discovered it was flawed. I then switched to weekly targets. For example, I did all of the PS prep in the first 2 weeks and them moved to DS for another 3 weeks. On Sundays I did OG. I can answer more questions about my study plan if you have any. The bottomline is one has to flexible in their approach. In my experience, planning is must but no plan survives contact with the enemy, so should change if required.
4. Test Prep Material: Manhattan (all quant books) and OG (11, 12 and quant abd verbal review). Nothing else is required. I was particularly week in DS and this site was the best for that. I have heard others say that MGMAT SC book is teh bible. For me it was over the top and too technical with too many rules, that I could not memorize in 2 months time. I am pretty good with English (ignore the quality of this post, as I am getting late for work) but SC was a weak spot. Sahil's notes on this site along with a few others helped the most.
I guess, that's all that I have. Feel free to ask any specific questions you may have.
