I think i am beaten..Score 700 Q49 V35 AWA 4.0 Please help

Hi, I just received my AWA score and feel devastated. I have a work experience of 18 months in IT and I was thinking about applying for the 2009 fall in Canadian Universities.
Please guide me. Should i take the GMAT again?I think my verbal and AWA scores are too low and my chances of admission seem pretty low.

I dont think you need to take the GMAT again, AWA scores are really not that important of a factor in the admission process. Are you a native English speaker, if not you would probably be asked to give TOEFL in which case a good score in TOEFL should be able to offset the 4 in AWA.

Talk to schools.

Most schools are pretty up front about your chances to get in. Let an admissions person know about your GMAT/GPA/work experience and see what they say.

I think it is also valuable to think about whether this is the best time for you to pursue your MBA. Just speaking for myself, I am glad that 5 years elapsed between undergrad and MBA because the case studies felt that much more concrete.

Given some more time, reading novels and taking an active approach to correcting your mistakes in English, your GMAT score may just go up on its own without GMAT specific studying

I agree: with a 700, I don't see the value in retaking the GMAT. A 4.0 in AWA isn't bad. My opinion is that if you truly studied hard and gave it your best effort, you probably won't improve much from 700. If you didn't study, maybe with some more effort you could go higher.

Now, as Tatiana said, whether you want to wait a few more years before getting the MBA is another story...

Retaking the GMAT

Hi,

I also gave the GMAT a few days back and scored 720 (VA - 36, QA - 51)
and AWA 4.

I am also in a dilemma whether to retake the GMAT to improve my essay score (and probably VA also).

I've decent workex (3 years - less quantitatively but good qualitatively), pretty good acads and extra curr.

I am planning to apply to a range of B Schools (some in the top 10 as well as the middle ranked ones in the US and quite a few in Asia Pacific).

Is my overall score less for that, considering my choice of colleges ? (I am mainly concerned about the AWA)

Also is it possible to get the AWA essays regraded or shall I retake the GMAT ?

I am in a big dilemma right now, will be really thankful if you could clear these doubts.

Shruti,

I have read that retaking the GMAT when you get a 720 or higher can actually be looked down upon. Dude, the average GMAT for Harvard is 720. Furthermore, you scored in the 99th percentile in Math, which schools look at as more important (I think).

Also, I have read that as long as an AWA is 4.0 it does not matter. I mean come on, a computer grades it.

I got a 50Q, 36V, overall of 710. So I feel your pain with the verbal (damn 78% so 2% off 80%), but I have asked many admissions consultants on this site and they all say the same thing, retaking the GMAT is unneccessary. Since you score 10 higher, I definitely think it is unneccessary for you.
