Unbelievable!!

by murwz81 » Mon Dec 07, 2009 8:01 pm
Hey guys,

I just came back after my second attempt at the GMAT. I did so bad that I am totally shocked. I scored the lowest ever. I scored 560. 25 Verbal and 42 Quant. My first attempt fetched me 640. Verbal 30 Quant 48.

I took the GMAT for the first time last december. I did not prepare much and I scored 640. I took the GMAT again after over a year and with lots of preparation. I practiced using Manhattan GMAT, GMATPrep, Princeton and what not.

I scored a 740, 720, 700, 680, 710 consistently when I took the GMATPrep during the days leading up to the exam. Each time I took the exam I never checked the answers. So, I would not suspect that I boosted my scores by re-taking the exam again and again. What is shocking is I have never scored less than 48 in math in any of the practice tests. None!!

During the exam I felt that quant was a little harder than normal.

I am not devastated or depressed rather I am further motivated to beat the hell out of this test. I want to score 750. I dont care even if I dont get into a business school. I want to score high just for the kicks.....

My concern is I have used up all my practice tests. I have taken all tests from MGMAT twice. I have practiced with GMATPrep multiple times. I do not know what else to use for practice. Do you guys think that I should chill for now and restart with the same practice tests later?

I cant even figure out what my weak areas are. I am not consistent in my performance. Sometimes, I get only 2 SCs wrong and sometimes I get 8 wrong. Same with RC, sometimes I get them all right. Yes, all of them and sometimes 7 or 8 of them wrong.

Does anyone see a pattern in my performance? Do any of you think that I have problems with focusing? Any help would be highly appreciated. I know I can do better than 560. 560 is a joke!! I laughed as I walked out of the GMAT center.

And guess what, I think record number of people are taking the GMAT. Everyone at Pearson was taking the GMAT and nothing else. The center was packed through out the day. People from all nationalities and color (black and white) are taking the exam. Is this suggesting something? Is everyone predicting a boom in bschool hiring in 2 years??

Crazy!!

Cheers,
R

I think I am in a similar boat like you, though I increased my score in my second attempt, taking the tests multiple time has its own disadvantage whether you check your answers or not. Since you performed bad in math as well this is what I can suggest:
Gauge your verbal performance from LSAT: You may buy last 10-15 years of LSAT papers, check you accuracy of RC and CR over there. As long as you fluctuate you will fluctuate, likely, in real test. For SC, check your grammar book, no other way to gauge your performance, but start tracking posts at manhattan their gmatprep section is authentic, see the explanation of Ron to see whether you can re connect.

Math: Nothing to help you either. Only way out is in case you have not done the OG 10 or paper tests buy the paper tests and look for some illegal copy of OG-10 on net( I think gmac will not mind it as they are outside production). Do GMAT Focus buy all 4 tests, you will see substantial overlap with OG-12 aound 8-10 per tests, hopefully 4th one will be fresh. Do the following books:
Algebra by Knight: Do the whole chapter on word problems.

run the gmatprep software like a mad guy. Knowingly do all wrong to see newer questions of lower levels as they might be new for you.
Charged up again to beat the beast :)
