Hey all,

I've definitely benefited from all the discussion in this forum so thanks all. Finished my GMAT today - 710 with Q47 (79), V41 (92), 710 (92). I will post a detailed debrief later.

What was SO annoying was that during my quant section - the monitor went blank - yes blank! Completely threw me off and I lost my momentum, I first thought that my computer was restarting - I raised my hand but noone came (apparently the examiner was on a loo break). I shook the computer and up came a DELL symbol - I thought, oh now its definitely restarting but after it warmed up for 10-15 seconds it started relaying the signal again, but the clock was still ticking in the background. This happened again during the end of the section but I was aware of it so didnt lose as much time as the first instance.

Complained during my quant break and they pushed all the wires into the sockets firmly and I did my verbal - tried to blank out the quant section and was relieved when I got 710 - but my quant score is a disappointment. On 3 GMAT preps I scored 49 in quant and my GMAT focus range for 3 tests was 47-51, so while I'm happy it wasn't worse, I still think I left 20-30 points on the table.

Don't know what I can do - I raised an incident at the center and will speak to GMAC but don't know what they will offer.

Have any of the instructors / other forum members heard of something like this? What are my options - I've heard of the 80 percentile in both Quant and Verbal "rule" and my quant is just under with 79 percentile. Overall the 710 is 92 percentile.

Am looking to apply to the top 5 US programs only so want to know whether this is an issue, I work as an Investment Banker at a top tier firm with 3 years experience and hold a Master's degree from Imperial College in London and an Undergrad bachelors degree both in Engineering.

Will post a proper debrief with the things I learned throughout my GMAT experience. In brief a big shout out to Manhattan GMAT - these guys absolutely rock with their material. Thanks to all

Cheers

Received a PM asking me to reply.

I haven't heard of that happening before - that must have been really unnerving. In my opinion, the testing folks should offer you the opportunity to take the test again for free.

In terms of the admissions side of things, I wouldn't worry about 79th percentile vs. 80th. The 80/80 thing is just a rough guideline, and the 79th percentile effectively meets that guideline. Basically, your score at this point would not be a cause for concern for any school.

The bigger thing to think about (and you should probably ask the admissions consultants about this) is how you're going to distinguish your application from others. I-banking is one of the most common backgrounds for b-school applicants. It may be the case that it is more worth your time, over the next couple of months, to try to get a promotion or commendation at work, take on some extra responsibilities, get more involved in some extracurricular or volunteer activities, etc. These things both give you more to write about / show on your application, and give you more visibility with the people you're going to ask for recommendations. (Again, ask the admissions folks what they think, as this is really their area of expertise.)
Please note: I do not use the Private Messaging system! I will not see any PMs that you send to me!!
