* Posting tired so please ignore the ridiculous tone
Kind of pissed my quant was so low. Little background:
Physics major, junior in college. Was scoring 49s-50s in quant and average in verbal before I started studying.
Used:
MGMAT SC and Number PRop (excellent)
Adv Gmat Quant (only did two problem sets but the strats and tacics are good so a decent purchse)
GMATPREP
Kaplan 800 (great for verbal. get this
198 hardest GMATprep problems (do after first 2 gmats)
OG (do ALL sc, 40 cr and 40 RC. 2/3 of both math. all you need. cr and rc too easy)
Take the MGMAT test first to see where you stand, its free. Start with quant studying, its easier to maintain a high level and its easy to get to the 49 leve quickly. After that don't take them, their tests in many ways suck and aren't worth the effort.
GMATprep is BY far the best indicator. Quant was slightly harder than on GMATprep, Verbal slightly easier.
Once you get good at SC youll face three scenarios:
1. Your sure of the answer and but you end up wrong (not too common)
2. You narrow it down to two answers, both seem right (hardest to decide)
3. You know the right answer but it looks awkward and weird. You don't like picking that answer
Most common on the GMAT is #3! By far! Most of the SC answers I picked I could confidently eliminate every answer. But I wasn't happy picking the one left because it wasn't pretty. Practice this-being able to pick right answers over pretty answers
Another tip. Don't worry about your practice test scores! RAnges mater! Not specific scores. Worry more about becoming an excellent test taker (timing)! And take the GMATprep as many times as you like.
Here are my prac tests
MGMAT 1: 560 (didn't know anything about the test, or DS. Didn't know complex numbers did not exist!)
MGMAT 2: 680
MGMAT 3: 690
GMATprep 1: 710 48q 34V (quant was so easy compareed to mgmat i thought i was bombing and stopped trying) 13 wrong q 10 v
GMAtprep2: 750 50q 41V 9 wrong in q 8 in verbal
GMATprep3: 770 50q 44v reapeat 9 in q 4 wrong in verbal.
So tired. Was gonna post the best way to study but am too tired now. The gmat math is the stupidest thing i have ever seen. I have studied such complex math and gotten so used to proofs that I hated actually having to plug in numbers for mgmat.
Pep talk:
For those of you who suck at math but good at verbal: The test is actually kinder to you guys (according to the standard deviation. anyone who disagrees hasn't looked at the charts.) Also, you can learn tricks to eliminate answers or even see trends. Your ranges will vary more. Don't give up.
For those of you who suck at verbal but good at math: You have more work to do, but you will have a harder time fluctuating (you wlill likely stay within whatever range gmatprep tells you). less likely you will see a shocker (low score).
Test Day:
No water bottles. I tried to sneak those tiny water bottles and they make you empty your pockets. dont practice with water like i did.
Breaks are 8 minutes. Give yourself 4 to 5. I did-and turned out actually gave myself 8
Water on face after both.
Lady wasted so much time getting me pens and a new pad. I ran out of time on quant because it took me about 3 minutes to get her attention. raise your hand for paper when your getting towards the last of the sheets. would complain to gmat but my score it too high too complain.
Best little trick I came up with: between the essays and math you have a break as you all know. none of you should be taking the essays to seriously. i finished with about 8 minutes left. I took an unsche. break, and then used my scheduled break. allows you more time if you need it. consider this
Things to take away from this (I will post more later on good and bad ways to study):
Don't worry about your god damn practice tests scores
This test is a horrible indicator: I scored 99 percentile in verbal and 85 in math. Everyone who knows me thinks that is hilarious
GMATprep all the way
dont use too much time to study. only 5 to 6 weeks tops. the beg. I used MGMAT and lots of it was a waste.
you don't need a course. i didnt know they existed until a few days ago.
apologizing now for this horrible offense to the english language. gmat youve been beaten. time to sleep
