by Roger » Sun Aug 30, 2009 8:37 pm
Thank you in advance for your time and comments.

My Profile:

M/31/Indian

Education:
Bachelor's in Engineering
Major: Instrumentation and Controls
Score: 72%

GMAT:
April 09 / 750: Q49+V42

Work Experience:
Total 9 years diverse
- First year post Bachelor's was in Business Development with a GIS software firm
- Next 5 years was in the BPO industry in Leadership positions(team size ranging from 20-100) in Services Operations managing 7 different projects(technical, sales, financial, customer service) in 3 Multinational firms
Started as a Team Leader and was progressively promoted to Operations Manager position
- 1 year in an entrepreneurial venture representing a US based corporate performance management firm
- Last 2 years were in a Business Process Management and Strategy and Planning role in the largest retail start-up in the country at a Senior Manager level

- Currently working with a telecom research startup as a consultant launching a new business

International Experience:
- Have travelled to US thrice on assignments of duration 3-4 months
- Last time was in 2006 to sign the commercial agreement and get trained for the entrepreneurial venture

Volunteering Profile:
Not the strongest

- Also taught him in improving his verbal and written communication skills

- Worked with a commercial station for an year from '07-'08

Shifted cities last year, thus last one year has been of low involvement in Volunteering as well as EC's

Post MBA goal:
Obvious available opportunities would in Business Development or Transition/Project Management in an international Outsourcing Firm

However, want to utilize my extensive operations/business process/strategy experience to make a switch into Strategy Consulting/Services Operations practice of a top tier consulting firm that focuses on Services firms in emerging markets

APPLICATION STATUS:
I had applied to Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM, part of Australian School of Business in Sydney) in May for the Jan intake-have been admitted with a 40% tuition scholarship.

I am currently debating on whether I should still apply to a few top ranked US schools. AGSM is an excellent program with a small and mature class and a strong reputation with consulting firms and overall in the APAC region however; I feel that I should at least give other schools a shot.

Schools short listed: Sloan, Duke

QUESTIONS FOR YOU:

- What are your thoughts on AGSM program?
- Is my profile competitive for the US schools I have shortlisted?
- Which other schools can I target?
- Is there anything I can do in the next one month to put together a compelling application

Needless to say, I would really appreciate a perspective on the predicament that I am in as I only have a month to put together applications for the other schools(if at all) in order to meeting R1 deadlines.

Thanks once again for your time and comments,

Regards
Roger

Dear Roger,

Congratulations on your admission to AGSM with a scholarship! That is quite an achievement and one to strongly consider. You can certainly apply to Duke and Sloan and see what happens. I think you have a shot of being admitted, but you should not expect any scholarship money. Scholarships at these two schools are very tough to get, and even then, might not be as much as 40%. AGSM is a great school with a strong reputation in the Asia-Pacific region. So, if you are looking to stay in that part of the world, it is a fabulous option.

Your profile is competitive for Duke and Sloan, but you will be competing for a few slots against a large number of applicants with similar profiles. Thus the application must stand out positively and make the admissions committee want to have you in the class. It is possible to write some great essays and secure great recommendations in the next month, followed by some great interviews to give you the best chance. I just think it is important for you to weigh the pros and cons of those schools against AGSM.

Good luck,
Lisa
