580 gmat score first attempt

Gave my GMAT today...Verbal was very very bad...Quants 50 Verbal 20. 580 total. Suggestions please. I am planning to take it my next month end. I am not that bad in Verbal. My prep tests verbal scores were never below 30.

Hi Deepak

Sorry to hear about your score, but I guess it happens. Your verbal seems weak. You will need to work on that aspect. Mastering Sentence Correction is the way to go. It's very much like maths and there are a fixed set of rules that you need to look out for. Follow the Manhattan Sentence Correction Guide. It gives clarity on the many expressions that we misuse in daily life.

Also, you mentioned that you never got below 30 in the prep tests. Well, how many questions were repeated from the OG/Review guides in those tests? That should give you an indication. If no questions were repeated, then you're fine. However, you need to work on your verbal. Your maths is well above average, so I suggest you not look at Maths at all till the next test. Do only verbal, verbal and more verbal.

Thanks for your valuable advise. The problem I faced was my overconfidence level after math section. I neglected to take the 8 min break. My mind was still with maths while my vision towards verbal was blured as a reason. I learnt from my first experience.

The concepts I could recongnise those repeated from OG were

1) that X and that Y -- Parallelism
2) a noun should be followed after a preposition
3) _________, noun, ___________ -- a modifier question with the first and last phrase describing the noun in the middle.
4) the number of / a number of

Will update the post the more I recall.

2) a noun should be followed after a preposition (No, this is wrong. A pronoun, gerund can follow a preposition too!)
3) _________, noun, ___________ -- a modifier question with the first and last phrase describing the noun in the middle.
4) the number of / a number of

Please check all the bold phrases that I have mentioned/highlighted and check if you can see the errors.
Please check the Manhattan Sentence Correction Guide. It's the only book that's required to take your verbal score up!
