Sentence Correction

Hello all,

I have a concern regarding a question I came across from manhatten gmat but I feel I need a further explanation than what they provide. The question is as follows:

The first woman elected to Congress in the United States, many people regard Jeanette Rankin to be a role model because of her committing to peace, as shown by her legislative votes against joining both World Wars.

A. many people regard Jeanette Rankin to be a role model because of her committing to peace

B. many people view Jeanette Rankin to be a role model because of her commitment to peace

C. Jeanette Rankin is considered as a role model by many people because of her commitment to peace

D. many people see Jeanette Rankin as a role model because of her commitment to peace

E. Jeanette Rankin is regarded by many people as a role model because of her commitment to peace

- I narrowed my choices down to C and E because I realized Jeanette Rankin is what is being modified by the first portion of the sentence, and I could not figure out which phrasing is correct between the two, "considered as a role model" or "is regarded by many people as a role model". I ultimately went with choice C but turns out I was wrong and E is correct. Could someone please provide a further explanation as to why E is correct and not C? Thank you ver much!

The difference between C and E is an idiom issue. CONSIDERED X AS Y is not the idiomatically correct form. The verb CONSIDER does not take a preposition; the correct form is CONSIDERED X Y. This is one of those idioms that a lot of people get wrong (the other common mistake is CONSIDER X TO BE Y).

In order to make C correct, it would have to have said: ...Jeannette Rankin is considered a role model...

REGARDED X AS Y is idiomatically correct, so the answer is E.
