I recently took the GMAT and did well on the verbal, but I scored a lousy 35 on the quant section.
I've read that some topics don't really show up unless you reach a certain level, but I haven't been able to get ahold of a list.
I've tried to gauge the relative difficulty of the questions in the official guide where I've done the bulk of my study. It would be nice to know the relative scoring level for each question.

Can anyone tell me what topics are tested to reach a score of 40? I have an overall goal of 650 on the exam.

Hi,

Topics remain the same however the complexity rises.

I have heard that once you get into 45+ level in the quant.. you'll face quite a number of ques from these topics
Combinatrics
Probability
Inequality
Geometry

You are correct about the above two topics. But the same can come for sub 40 level also.

This isn't true, though I've seen it repeated it many times. You don't see more counting/probability questions at the high level of the test; you see harder counting/probability questions at the high level of the test. I had (only) one question in counting/probability the last time I took the GMAT, and the same has been true for most of my high-scoring students. I can't guarantee that the same will be true on anyone else's test, but if you did see a lot of counting/probability, it won't be because of your score; it will be because the questions are being picked partly at random from a large database, and the 'luck of the draw' might lead you to see a lot of questions in a certain area.

Acutally, I haven't taken the GMAT yet. I've been preparing for the next January test. I feel that I'm not good at Quant. Now, I'm wondering how to prepare for getting over 40. Based on your comment, should I review basic level question of all topics instead of focusing on some specific topics?
