NUS & SMU, Singapore B Schools

by abhas59 » Thu Aug 12, 2010 1:04 pm
Hi All,

I recently gave GMAT & got a score of 660 (M 49, V 31). AWA Score was 5.5
I also have 3 years of work experience in IT firm.
I want to enroll for Full-Time MBA in Asian Universities (mainly Singapore & Hongkong).

Recently, I came across Singapore Management University MBA. The university is regionally very reputed but the MBA course is very young.
Can someone please let me know whether SMU MBA is really good as compared to NUS MBA?

For a school as young as SMU, it is hard to say how their programs will compare long term with NUS. At least one ranking system puts them 89th compared to NUS at 35th. However, I don't see SMU listed on either topmba.com or FT.

That is certainly a respectable showing for a relatively new school. You should look closely at the courses offered to see which would prepare you for the career you are seeking.

You may also want to contact the schools to find out which firms interview there and where their graduates end up working. Both of those factors will be very important to you in a couple of years. Employer recognition of the graduates is a strong indication of the market's valuation of the degree.

In the end, a school is as good as it's graduates. SMU has only graduated a handful of classes. It is too early to compare those results against a schools as long-established as NUS.

You say the school has a strong regional reputation. That is very positive. You might try to find out if they have an alumni organization that you can tap into and talk to their graduates about their experiences.

Hi Tani,

Thanks for your reply. As you previously suggested, I will try to contact students currently enrolled in the institutes. That will give a better idea about the SMU MBA program. Only one problem with the SMU MBA program is that university has an intake only in the month of Jan. So, admissions for Jan 2011 are already closed. Thus, I cannot wait for a single whole year if I can get into other good institutes.

Kind Regards,
Abhas.

Hmmm. That's very interesting. I'm surprised that a school that wants to compete with top schools around the world would not operate on a similar calendar. I wonder what their reasoning is.

Good luck!

Hi Tani,
I found the admission calendar of SMU a bit strange too. Many institutes in Asia does not prefer to start MBA course in January. Also, I need to get information about the curriculum and the help it provides to applicants for placements.
Meanwhile, I am also going with institutes in Canada as I found in some forums that Canadian institutes are good for MBA too. And economic recession has not affected canada much.
I found York University in Canada that is regionally very reputed and planning to apply.
Can you suggest any universities that can be probable with respect to my profile?

Kind Regards,
Abhas.

Schulich, Rotman and Ivey are generally considered the best in Canada. They are very fine schools and don't have quite as many applicants as they US schools. You might check out their offerings.
