Hi,

I am interested in applying to grad schools that have an MBA with a specialization in media/entertainment. I have shortlisted four schools that have such a program:
1. NYU Stern's EMT program
2. Columbia University's Media program
3. UCLA Anderson
4. USC Marshall

My question is what are the chances of getting into say a movie production house in a managerial capacity after an MBA from any of the above four schools?

Also I have studied in India, from an institute where the primary medium of instruction is English. Though UCLA and USC are pretty clear that they need TOEFL too, for Columbia, I just want to confirm that they need TOEFL scores for a candidate like me to get into their MBA program. Kindly help me out with these questions.

Thanks for your question. I actually started my career in the film industry in Los Angeles, working in feature film and television production for all the major hollywood studios. This pre-dated my MBA, but I would highly recommend reading the book WANNABE by Everett Weinberger which details his true life adventures trying to leverage his MBA to work in Hollywood (spoiler alert: it didn't work out). Granted, he was going for the creative side, so if your goal is to work on the business side for a studio, you can do well with a degree from one of those schools.

As always, Bryant has great advice. I would add that one way to check is to look at the companies you want to work for post-MBA and ask two questions: 1) on what MBA campuses do they interview? (usually the school will give you this information) and 2) where do their managers come from? Entertainment, like many industries, is full of companies with varied backgrounds and talents. For every company that hires highly-qualified MBAs into entry-level management, you will find one that believes in "working your way up from the bottom". If you live in a city with a strong entertainment community, see whether there is an industry organization that encourages young members. That could be a great way to get "inside" information on the hiring preferences of your dream employers.
