PPrep 1: 670 51Q 28V..SC is the biggest leak!

by xeqtr » Thu Mar 20, 2008 7:23 am
Hi, after two weeks of study I did the first pprep cat; I am happy with my Q since I didnt do stupid mistakes and answered all right, however my problem is with SC, and it leads to a time shortage at the end of the test.

I had a total of 11 wrong and 19 correct answers, 9 of the wrong ones are SC!! I read the Manhattan Review SC, it is really great but it seems I just can not apply a strategy to attack SC in a fast an efficient way and once I am down to 2-3 choices I just use my ear, which is most of the wrong since I am not native. Any ideas is really appreciated since I plan to take the exam in 3 weeks?

Is there a list of common idioms for GMAT that I can study regularly? My plan is to attack OG10 and 11 with the guidance of Manhattan also review each correct and wrong answer, but I am not sure if it is going to work or not. I do not have a serious problem with RC or CR since I believe I am quite good in English however I was never really that much into grammar rules when I was in UK! Do you think Kaplan or anyother book may help me about general strategies or is it best to practice on OG Qs and take notes of certain idioms phrases etc to get myself familirize with them?

Thank you in advance!

Did you get the Manhattan Review SC book, or the Manhattan GMAT SC book? The latter is the guide that is recommended...

I have Manhattan GMAT SC, I read the book took notes etc. but did not do the Qs in OG after each section, I'll begin to review it 2nd time and do the Qs with in depth review. However my problem seems with Idioms I think, I had so many idioms in powerprep I dunno probably it was just pure luck to get those Qs but I do not want to fail cuz of them in GMAT, since my other sections are quite well. My hit rate is not even %50 in SC! My grammar is not that bad but I just fail to have the correct answer, even I can eliminate the ones with wrong verb/subject agreement etc etc. once I am down to last two choices I tend to get the wrong one and that means I lack some fine tune knowledge as well as the fundamentals. What's your suggestion? Do you think I may learn GMAT way by just doing OG and analayzing each Q?? Do you think Manhattan GMAT SC is a complete guide for GMAT SC? If so I'll focus much much more on it. If I can ever take my 28 Verbal to some around 34-35 I think I can beat 700! Thanks.

Well I thought, I can keep to share my experiences within this post. I began (re)studying Manhattan SC by solving each problem set and reviewing my answers. I went up to %70 in SC some as high as %90, I guess if I can keep this in real exam I may hit very well about 700!
I'll have the 2nd GMATPrep tomorrow and will see if my studies are really paying off! GL to all..
