Guidance please

by greatchap » Wed May 27, 2009 10:49 pm
Hello Everyone,

I am preparing for GMAT and my test date is not too far. Infact it is just 2 weeks away. The gmat scene at my end goes a long way. I have been preparing since late 2007. Then exactly an year ago in June 2008, i gave my gmat exam. I scored 600. (Q: 48 V23/24). Though happy with quant, I decided to work on verbal. One and half months later I gave another attempt and landed with an even lower score (Q42: V22). At that time I was under pressure and when I reached the verbal section I felt almost blacked out type. Dejected, I took a break for a while. Since then I have been busy with work. I did resume my prep in between but couldnt continue for long. A little over a month ago I restarted my prep. I revised stuff and started with practice tests. My last year's prep came handy as I do remember a lot of stuff as I had worked hard last year (specially in quant).

Now i have been giving gmatclub;s tests and few 800score tests that I have (from last year). Though I am doing okay in them, I mean getting 8-10 quant ques incorrect usually and similar no of verbals usually but its today when I started to give Manhattan tests, I was blown away. I found the quant of manhattan this time to be really tough. I remember that last year when I gave manhattan it was not that tough.

I am in a fix, on one hand I feel my prep is okay but on the other hand i feel that this time when I give exam I wanna be sure I can reach 700. I still have to give GMATPrep and I am waiting for the right moment.

What should I do? Any help or so will be appreciated. Feeling a bit uneasy.

Thanks a lot,

Cheers,
Gr

What is the practice test that you took and recieved scores or 600 and <600? Is it Kaplan? If so then dont worry much. They skew down the score considerably. But definitely concentrate on the VErbal side. Have you studied using the MGMAT SC guide or the Kaplan Verbal workbook? If not the i suggest you to give these a try they are excellent books to improve your verbal score. The RC strategy of Kaplan improved my RC score considerably..

I have gone thru MGMAT SC guide. It sure is helpful and has helped me in that area. The tests I am talking about is 800Score & MGMAT as well as gmatclub.

I guess I need to give GMAT Prep soon to check where I stand.

You might try working Kaplan problems. They tend to be a bit easier and then for some harder problems go to the challenge archive of Manhattan GMAT.

Help

I gave gmat prep today and got a score of 600. (Q44 V28). Man what should I do. I have only ten days left before I give the exam and I am aiming for 700. Please advice.

In MGMAT I dunno how but I got 700, their scoring system is weird.

postpone

I am thinking of giving the test a little later. I mean it would be very difficult or a miracle to move from 600-700 in a matter of ten days. As mentioned just gave gmatprep and I did struggle in verbal.

What do you guys say? Shouild I postpone.?

I remember when I was in my teens, I used to read these teen magazines. And there they had a section about Q&A from readers, where all the angsty teenage girls would post their questions regarding such and such relationship and other related stuff. I found it very annoying that every time, the featured specialist (psychologist or smth like that) would say something like: you should evaluate and see deep in yourself if the answer is yes or no... no one else except yourself can give the correct answer to your question... it's all about how you feel inside...

You can plainly see that these aren't real answers! They were just "stalling", not providing real, clean-cut answers.

Now, since I've grown out of that phase, I sort of understand why the shrink would provide such "useless" answers: he/she didn't want to be responsible for whatever choice a person had to make. If I were asking the shrink if I should get back with my boyfriend and he'd say "Yes", then I sure as hell would hold him responsible if the guy broke my heart again.

I know this seems like beating about the bush, but it's largely the same situation here: I doubt that anyone will post a definitive answer to your question, since no one really wants to take the risk of being the "bad adviser". You should look deeply into your heart and you'll know the ans.... :P

But anywayz, I'll take a chance: try the other GMAT prep test tomorrow. If your score is still in the same "area", then postpone if your target score is 700.

You are right DanJ, I should myself look deep inside and figure out or find the right answer. I decided to postpone because it will take me a little longer to reach that mark (700+) and preparation does not happen overnight. Let me practice more and then go 4 it.
