75cloning technology

by real2008 » Fri Jul 03, 2009 3:17 am
With cloning technology, scientists are approaching what has long been the ultimate goal of modern husbandry: achieving a consistency of quality and production in farm animals as once thought to be limited to manufactured goods.
(A) achieving a consistency of quality and production in farm animals as once thought to be
(B) achieving farm animals with a consistency of quality and production as were once thought of as
(C) achieving in farm animals a consistency of quality and production that was once thought to be
(D) achievement of farm animals whose consistency of quality and production are the same as what were once thought to he
(E) achievement of farm animals at a consistency of quality and production once thought of as

Why not A?

A is unclear...
achieving what...
achieving a consistency of quality and production in farm animals
are they different
or is it
consistency of "quality and production", in farm animals

so C is correct

other way to look at this sentence is by comparison

quality of products delivered by farm animals is
compared with manufactured goods
Only C brings out that comparison correctly

A is also wrong because the correct idiom is

as....as...

In D and E, "achievement" is incorrect.

In A, wrong idiom.

In B, "achieving farm animals" is unclear and gramatically incorrect.

C is the answer.

(E) achievement of farm animals at a consistency of quality and production once thought of as

Why not A?

Now I feel the explanations may be as they follow:

the choice should talk about the process i.e. achieving rather than about the result i.e. achievement, hence d and e out.

b wrongly talks about achieving farm animals; rather choice should talk about achieving consistency

now in choice a, as once thought to be modifies animals, hence wrong.

choice c is correct

expert opinion please? somebody pl may comment , if i am wrong...

I dont think there's anything to do with process.. its just that the two sentences D and E do not make any sense when they say "achievement of farm animals".. if at all this is an achievement, its an achievement of scientists and not farm animals.. This is the reason you can eliminate D and E straightaway

B can also be eliminated as it says achieving farm animals.. we arent achieving farm animals, but the we are achieving a consistency of something in farm animals

Now A can be eliminated because of the use of "as" .. there's nothing that is referring back to "consistency of quality and production" so that it can be compared with the same in manufactured goods. A also alters the meaning and it seems that farm animals were once thought to be limited to manufactured goods.. which is incorrect..

Only choice left is B
One love, one blood, one life. You got to do what you should.
