Some strategy advise needed

by usualsuspect » Thu Mar 05, 2009 5:56 am
Hi all,
I m retaking my gmat in another 2 months or so. I have not booked my date. I m not taking gmat for the first time. I have already taken it twice!! Yes, u read it right!! twice!!
Took the first test 4 yrs back , got 650 Q48, V31. i retook it again last yr. I thought i cud score better. But i got 620 Q48 V28.
After my quants section got over, i felt i had done it pretty well. But i did very badly in the verbal section!
So here i m , goin to give my last attempt!! Following are my reflections:

1. I dint buy OG verbal and quants review guides. Got them this time.
2. I didnt go Manhattan SC and OG in tandem.
3. I never did all the mock CATs in 4 hour frame. I always skipped the essays and went straight to the section.

I have the following books:
1. OG 11 and quants /verbal review
2. kap premier
3. kap 800
4. manhattan gmat (SC, geometry, numeric properties)
5. with new manhattan book, i have access to 6 MGMATs.
I dont have princeton as i m aware of the basics of gmat.
Now comes the question!! :) ( if you have reached to this point!)
1. How do i effectively use these books?
2. what to study first, and what to keep last?
3. What other materials should i use to improve? Does 1000 series of SC/CR/RC help? If so, when i shd do them?
4. How to schedule my mock tests taking that i would be having 8 to 10 weeks of preps this time.
5. How to keep track of my mistakes? I haev realised that this is extremely vital.

I want to know how successful gmat takers have approached on the above questions. Any suggestions are welcome
Cheers,

Although i have less experience in GMAT than you, here are my 2 cents..

1. How do i effectively use these books?
Simple ans: As effectively as possible. You have a good set of books. go through them cover to cover and try solving each of the questions especially in the OGs.

2. what to study first, and what to keep last?
If i were you, i'd go with Verbal first and make sure i learn all the fundamental rules. For this i'd use the Manhattan guide.

3. What other materials should i use to improve? Does 1000 series of SC/CR/RC help? If so, when i shd do them?
I'd say go to the 1000 series when you have exhausted all the OGs and Kaplan questions in that order..

4. How to schedule my mock tests taking that i would be having 8 to 10 weeks of preps this time.
Once you have a grip on the fundamentals (in verbal, since your Q score indicates that you are good in Quants) then try to take a mock test every week and then spend time reviewing ALL the answers. Another important thing is to time yourself.

5. How to keep track of my mistakes? I haev realised that this is extremely vital.
If you search through the "GMAT resources" page of this forum you'll be able to find a GMAT test/prep grid. Download it and use it. Also make flash cards, you wont believe how important will be unless to make them and regularly review them.

If you want to study in parallel with me feel free to visit my prep blog (in my sig)..

Hope this helps..
