Question - Should I Write GMAT again?

by shweta.aec » Sun Aug 15, 2010 1:04 am
This was the question which was running through my mind when I gave my GMAT on 28th June '10 and got a score of 560.
Yes, a 560. Questions running through the mind plenty.. What went wrong ? Should I reappear? Searched through all
posts you can think of ...Result was more confused..Anyways , I told to myself that I need to do it again.
I booked a date for reappearing on 6th August.Yes I did. This time I thought of doing it little different from the previous attempt.
First of all , I took a break from my studies. I went back to my native place to attend my brother's wedding. Came back fresh and next thing was to practice daily 20 questions each from PS,DS,RC,CR and SC so that my brain gets used to solving all these stuff altogther. Then, I wrote my first mock test after my first Real GMAT.The score was 720. Yes it was 720. Even before appearing for my first GMAT test , I always had scored more than 650 in all my mock tests. But this time score was not my concern. My concern was were am I going wrong.Where am I doing mistakes? I analysed through all my questions and noted the ones which took more time than usual. Also, made it a point to note down the type of questions where I was getting the logic wrong. The best thing to happen to me during that period was the blog I read on BTG about "Three days Before GMAT".It helped me a lot. It saved me from burning out just before the exam.Unlike my first attempt, I didnt write a test before the D day. So, when I went for the exam I was all fresh and was not as tensed as I was during the first exam. Also, I had a good night's sleep jus before the exam day. And the result was there. My second attempt for GMAT - 700 .Yes it was 700 :)
I know I couldn't have done it any better with all the cold and the cramped stomach I had. When i was giving the exam, I prayed to God . No, not to throw some easy questions on the computer screen but asked him to take care of my health and promised that I will take care of the rest :)
Yeah I was very happy at the end of the test as I did it.
So, all those who are thinking that whether to reappear for the test after getting a bad score please go ahead and do so. All that matters is ur mindset on the exam day.Trust me, I didn't add any extra materials to my study for my second test .It was just the attitude which changed. Also, keep in mind two things.First, have a very good sleep before the day of the exam.Second, don't burn out urself before the test.

All the best ppl!

P.S- SOrry for getting the post lil late as it was supposed to be on BTG on 6th Aug. Oh yes my best frnd did say that make sure you post the story soon so that whoever is confused to take a decision will take it soon..Sorry I am late :( and yes thanks to all my frnds to support me all through this and spcl thanks to BTG for all the help and all the awesome questions which are discussed out here in the forums :)

Well Done Shweta...You have given me hope..;-)

Could you list out what went wrong in first attempt and what you did to overcome those mistakes ? Any new resources that you used in b/w 2 attempts ?
I am on a break !!

@ Nikhil - 37 Verbal / 48 Quants

@Suman -
WHAT WENT WRONG IN MY FIRST ATTEMPT (as per my understanding)
1. I didn't spend much time in reviewing my tests instead I kept on giving my tests.
2. I kept on giving tests even just before the test day which made me all more tensed and I came under a pressure to perform.
3. I couldn't sleep before the test day :(
4. About 10 mins were left after my Quant Section and I already read in one of the posts that if you complete before the time then may be that you didnt give your 100 percent and that made me more tensed :(
5.Also, I was totally off during my verbal section , I was thinking about when will the exam end and also I spent 10 mins in one of the RC passages
6. I lost my confidence in between the exam.

ANY NEW RESOURCES USED IN B/W 2 ATTEMPTS
No, nothing new.I just reviewed the same old stuff but this time jotting down all the minute details and where and how the mistakes are happening

@ Joylibs
Books I used for both 1st and 2nd attempt
-----------------------------------------------------------
OG 10,11 ,12
OG Quant Maths
CR Bible - Powerscore
Manhattan SC Book
Powerprep Tests
GMAC tests
Manhattan Tests
Princeton Review Tests
Kaplan Tests

Mock Scores for the 2nd Attempt
MGMAT1 - 720
MGMAT2 -690
MGMAT3- 690
MGMAT4-730

GMAC1 - 720
GMAC2 -700

Hope that helps

At least your score won't be the deciding factor for your admissions.

Trust me getting 700 is a great achievement.
