I am a graduate from the University of California, Riverside. I started out college a bit rocky but leveled out and started doing well until my 3rd year when my father passed away.

I also never did an internship during my school years because of my own lack of knowledge and limited school support. My GPA ended up to be around 2.8~3.0.

After graduating I had to move out of state because of several family problems. I moved to Georgia and struggled for 3 years to find "professional experience" in finance. Regardless of this fact im still hopeful and know that I am very capable if given an opportunity.

What advice can you give for finding a job that will help when i decide to apply to schools? What do you think my chances are at trying to get into the best school possible? What path should I take?

Dear adethomas14,

You need to find a professional opportunity that interests you and where you can excel. Applicants with demonstrated career progression in one field with leadership/managerial experiences are the most competitive in terms of work experience. That is not to say you have to have 4-5 years; if you have progressed rapidly in 2 years and been successful, then you can be just as attractive. Depending on how your resume looks, you will also need to explain any gaps in employment and what you did during those times.

Your GPA will need to be mitigated to some degree by your GMAT score. Thus the higher the better in terms of where you need to score to be competitive. You might also consider building an alternative transcript with courses at a local community college or university, especially if you did poorly in quantitative coursework or did not take college algebra and calculus.

Other than that, continue to do some research and visit some schools to get an idea of what it will be like to be in business school. It is never too early to start the research process.

Good luck,
Lisa

Dear abhi.genx7,

If you are referring to a medical internship, then that would be considered work experience in the U.S.

Regards,
Lisa
