when to register for the test

I want to take Gmat in march 2011.. i am already preparing for it.. I havent registered at the centre yet. Should i do that first and then study further.. Also i want to know that admission in colleges start in fall and late fall... is there any advantage of the extra time i might hv between march and sep-oct

Registering for the exam is an entirely personal decision. Some people do it as early as when they start with their preparation and some register in less than a week.
I think the ideal time to register for the GMAT is when you feel that you are ready to take on the GMAT and feel that you have made a good amount of progress and are inching towards your target GMAT score. Since you said that you want to take the GMAT in March, you may want to book an appointment by around 15th Jan.
I don't understand what you mean by 1) the extra time between march and september-october. Will be better if you can precisely put your question.
