Profile Evaluation Please

by illogical » Fri Nov 27, 2009 10:13 pm
Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to evaluate profiles here and thanks to the community here for all of the valuable info on Beatthegmat.

Can you please evaluate my profile with respect to my school list?

Wh/M

GMAT: 690-- M (60%) V (95%)

Work Experience: 6 yrs

Graduated from Grinnell College and went immediately to China where I became fluent in Chinese and built a web marketing firm. Founded one of China's largest finance blogs and continue to run that. Was recruited to run the new digital group at one of the world's largest marketing companies and have been doing that for the last year back in the US. Manage teams of roughly 5-25 employees and vendors to deliver complex web products (websites, iphone apps etc) on behalf of leading brands. Built revenue of the new group from 0 to roughly 1 million over the first year.

My goal is absolutely to build and run major companies in China. I want to attend business school so that I can gain the strategic managerial know-how and financial nuts-and-bolts to finance and grow a new or relatively new company. The market is there and I have taken a stab at it already but feel that my work in China is not done. In my five years in China, I literally watched as the cranes of free-market capitalism lifted sky scrapers from the dirt and pulled millions from abject poverty.

Target schools:

Reach: Harvard, MIT, Yale

Realistic: Duke, NYU (part-time with employer paying [don't know if that is a good move or not]), Virginia

Safe: Texas, UNC, USC

I hope that these are safe enough because I don't really see a lot of value in paying so much for a school ranked much lower than Texas. After all, this is a big investment of both time and money.

BTW, I did feel that the GMAT was a little harder than I had expected. I had gotten a 720 on both GMAT Prep practice tests and then got hit with a ton of linear algebra (which I hate) on the real GMAT so I could take it again if that is really necessary.

Lastly, I would be totally willing to pay your consulting fee if you can get me into my reach schools (especially without retaking the stupid GMAT) so feel free to reply or PM me with a pitch.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

Dear Andrew,

I think you have a competitive profile for your target schools and you have done a thorough self-assessment. A higher GMAT score certainly won't hurt you, but I don't know that it will make a significant difference in your admissions decisions as I see some interesting aspects to your background that distinguish you in a positive way. Only you can decide if you feel you will increase your score enough to justify the time/money investment of a GMAT retake.

Since admissions decisions are based on the application package being evaluated holistically, the quality of the essays, recommendations and resume--not to mention interview--are critical to the process. This holistic evaluation is why an admissions consultant might be worth the expense if attending a top 15 program is your ultimate goal. As I stated, I think it is a realistic outcome for you based on your post. However, I have seen many applicants lose that opportunity due to poorly put together application packages. I encourage you to take the 15-20 minutes to research the different consultants out there and take advantage of our free consultation. You can request a free consultation on our website at www.stacyblackman.com. Thanks for inquiring on our services.

Best of luck,
Lisa
