I scored 700 on GMAT (V38/Q47) last week. This was my second attempt after almost 3 years. I studied little over 2 months. My study wasn't very systematic because of a busy work and family life plus a job related move. Nevertheless, I was focused. Practice is the key.
The main thing I'd suggest is not to keep a short sighted focus but to keep the big picture in mind. Don't study just for the test. I tried to get much more out of this test than just a good score. I not only studied the grammer for the test but also applied it in my every day job. My job involves frequently communicating and presenting to a group of users. I started checking my e mail drafts and presentations against GMAT standards. I've become so used to the parallelism now that I can spot the common mistakes quite easily. Scanning e mails for grammer completeness has become my hobby.
Finally, reading some of the success stories here gave me the hope that I can also do it. Looking back, I think GMAT is unnecessarily mystified. It's a challenging test but if you keep it simple and practice, you will win.
