Hi swerve,

We're told that of the employees at a company, 60 percent were men and, of these, 1/10 were still employed after a recent corporate restructuring and the number of women who were still employed after the restructuring was FIVE TIMES the number of men who were employed after it. We're asked what percent of the women were STILL employed after the restructuring. This question can be solved in a couple of different ways, including by TESTing VALUES.

Let's TEST 100 as the total number of employees.

With 100 employees....
60% are men --> (.6)(100) = 60 male employees
100 - 60 = 40 female employees

After the restructuring....
1/10 of the men were STILL employed --> (.1)(60) = 6 men still employed
60 - 6 = 54 men NOT still employed

The number of women STILL employed was 5 TIMES the number of men still employed --> (5)(6) = 30 women still employed
40 - 30 = 10 women NOT still employed.

Percentage of women STILL employed after the restructuring = 30/40 = 3/4 = 75%

Final Answer: E

Trivial problem for the grid technique (aka double-matrix):

We can let the number of employees = 100.

Thus, 60 are men and 40 are women.

We also see that 6 men were still employed after the restructuring.

Thus 6 x 5 = 30 women were still employed, so 30/40 = 75% of the women were still employed.

Answer: E
