Troy

In his eagerness to find a city worthy of Priam, the German archaeologist Schliemann cut through Troy and uncovered a civilization a thousand years older as was the city Homer’s heroes knew.
(A) older as was the city Homer’s heroes knew
(B) more ancient than the city known to Homer’s heroes
(C) older than was the city known to Homer’s heroes
(D) more ancient of a city than Homer’s heroes knew
(E) older of a city than was the one known to Homer’s heroes

IMO C.

Older is more concise and appropriate than 'more ancient'. Also, older than is the correct usage.

Please comment if you think otherwise.

The only bad thing I can see with C is "than was the city..."
Still, IMO older is better than more ancient.

More comments on this please.

It's a tricky one but I would select B only because it compares the two things the proper way with "more ..than" usage. Besides, "was" in C is not needed.

Well , I think B is the winner simply because of the elimination of option C. C wrongly compares a noun 'city' with a verb (action) 'was', which is incorrect - the right comparison is either a noun to a noun - city to city or action to action.

so B is the one left - which uses the right comparison.

It would have been better without "was" but than, "ancient" is more preferred to "older" when referring to age of cities or civilizations.
