680-710 debrief

by arun8421 » Sun Nov 28, 2010 7:38 am
Hi All,

I am non native speaker.I took GMAT on Oct 30th and scored 710(V-37,Q-49).I am strong in Quant So didnt practise much. For Verbal I followed-CR Bible,Manhattan SC guide and OG-11,12.I took Gmat for the first time in August and scored 680(V-31,QA-50).I prepared in a haphazard fashion for the 2nd time just concentrating on the weaknesses which i felt dimnished score in my first attempt. But i am still not satisfied with my QA score.Normally i never score anything less than 50.VA score is pretty much similar to what i have been getting in MGMAT mocks. So no regrets about that.
I have a query. If i retake GMAT and score lesser will adcom have negative impression or does it consider only the highest score.I will post a more detailed debrief in a few days.

Thanks and Regards,
Arun.

The adcom does consider only the highest score but major reduction in score is not an ideal impression on them. Considering you got 710, even if you improve your score they will ask you the reason why you retook the GMAT inspite of a 700 + score. Moreover, 50 in Quant wont do wonders to your application nor your score what a 49 cant.

Congrats on your 710!!! :)

Thanks Guys for ur replies.......What i believe is that if i can score 51 in qa(best case) it will increase my score by 20 points ....and since i am targeting isb i believe a score of 730-740 is on par for it.......

Firstly, noone can guarantee a 51.
Secondly, the verbal score might dip.
Thirdly, 20 points would in no way improve your application. Above 700 is enough for most schools.

Retaking the GMAT is a not a simple issue and you need to think carefully before taking any decision.

I dont know how to put it....but have noticed among a large pool of Indian members on this forum that they seem to be a little over conscious on numbers game.Is it really true that the Indian B-school would ditch/evaluate people (-a.k.a humans) on 20-30 points?...If that is the case, I probably would never want to end up in such a school in the first place! :|

There was a breath-of-fresh-air reply by Ron Purewal, which is a masterpiece for anyone who is in the process of going for an MBA.Ill try to find it and post the link here.
