could someone explain what's wrong with E(if it's wrong in your opinion)?

IMO D.

in E, comparing refusal and disregard with like as if a noun, does not look better option to me. on the other hand, D is better with 'just as...so'.
When you think you can or you cannot, you are generally correct.
