Journey from 550 to (hopefully) 650+!

by RyanJW » Sun Mar 25, 2012 11:05 am
I took my first GMAT in February, with about a month of prep-work which was far from what I needed but I wanted to get an idea of how much more studying I needed to do.

I first decided to get the Princeton Review online prep course (GMAT Online- the self-guided one). Of the two complete GMAT practice tests I took, I achieved scores of 560 (36V 31Q) and 570 (36V 33Q) and on the individual quant practice section I scored a 37. So through these PR practice tests my verbal was consistent but my quant ranged from 31 to 37. I took my GMAT in February and got a 550 (36V [surprise, surprise] and 30Q). Obviously there is a ton of room for improvement. My dream school is University of Washington and I'm going to give myself until R1 next year to improve my score. The GMAT score I'm looking for is 650+. My GPA is strong, as is my extra-curricular activity and (I feel, although short) my employment history.

Age: 24
GPA: 3.5
Relevant Employment History(almost four years including internships): Marketing internship at a large frozen snack food company, supervisor at large food/event service provider for sporting events, worked with a best-selling author/business consultant (assisted in developing/conducting interviews and compiling data for a recently published book on customer experience, worked as a project manager with this company), worked in a call center for a mutual fund company where my position was outsourced to another company, was asked to go to that company with a promotion, stayed at that company for a short period of time and I am currently working as a supervisor at Starbucks. I recently received an offer to go back to the mutual fund company I was previously employed with in an analyst role, so I am no longer a supervisor at Starbucks.

In addition to that, during my time at college I was approved to receive course credit for completing an independent research project on the business concept of third places and customer loyalty and created a 20 page paper supported by survey data from over 200 participants.

My goal schools are- UW, University of Illinois, UNC, UF-Gainesville, BC and BU.

I'd like to get your thoughts on whether this background is strong enough for a lacking GMAT score. I'm realistic and know that I probably won't hit 700 on my next go around with the GMAT but I'm wondering if something around a 620-640 might be enough to get me into the above schools. UW is my goal school.

Bumping an old post because my story hasn't changed yet and I'd love to get some feedback on my profile/strategy.

I wanted to also get some input on "free time".

I'm currently taking the Knewton course but find myself having some downtime where I can't dedicate myself fully to a video or set of questions. What did you do when you had this free time? Do you recommend a set of flash cards or something like that?

One of my weaknesses is RC. RC has never been a weakness for me before on standardized tests so I'm puzzled as to why it is now. What type of material did you read to numb yourself from how boring the passages are? I feel that if I can master RC, my verbal score will likely go up significantly.

Quant is a whole other topic. I'm concentrating on Knewton for this and I've also signed up for the MGMAT foundations of math course.

I look forward to reading any input that you may have!

I've been going through the Knewton course. Watching every video, going over every concept, doing every HW assignment and even the additional work.

The one thing I've noticed that I don't really like is that I haven't found a way to re-complete the assessments. While I understand that they're "assessments" they're also filled with valuable examples that I could learn from re-doing. I'll look more into figuring out if I can re-do them once I'm finished the course.

Before I started the course, though, I had to take their 1st GMAT. Although it's been a while since I've last taken a practice GMAT, I didn't do too well (560, 37Q, 31V). What was notable to me in this score, though, was that it was pretty much a flip of the scores I'm used to getting. My normal verbal score is around a 36-37 and my normal quant score is around a 30-33. So it was kind of weird that they'd flip like that.

This week I'll be finishing section 3 of Knewton and likely making my way into section 4. I really do like this program and feel like I'm learning a lot. I'll probably be throwing in some additional reading this week as well.

I've been spending a good amount of time on section 3 but I finished it up today, I know I'll have to keep going back to it to reinforce what I've learned but this section focused on quantitative strategy and sentence correction.

Using their HW/exercises I was able to figure out my weak points in Sentence Correction which gives me a better idea of things I really need to focus on and things that I can put a little less emphasis on in my studies. I'll be going more in-depth in this section over the weekend.

The next section is RC, which I'm pretty excited about. As I've said before- I'm a strong reader, I've just been faltering at this section. Whether it's not paying enough attention or falling for the trick answers- I'm hoping this section helps me fix that.

So I took my pre reading comprehension assessment last night before beginning that class.

15/16 correct! I was pretty happy that I only got one wrong. Looked into the one I got wrong further and it was something that I need to work on but I shouldn't miss it in the future. I also took the video class for this section and followed it pretty well.

The way I usually approach RC questions is I'll read the entire passage, only take notes if something strikes me as a "questionable section" along with the main idea of the passage and going from there. I think that I'll need to start taking more thorough notes but since my approach seems to work I'm not going to go overboard with these.

I'll be taking the number properties assessment today and probably viewing that class tomorrow.

If you guys have any questions about my studying or if you're considering the Knewton class and have questions about the layout/etc. I'm happy to answer them. Otherwise I'm using this post as my blog/study log.

Oh! And I'm pretty sure I finished my "Goals" essay (750). Two more to go.

I've had a lot of things going on lately and definitely wouldn't have it any other way. While I'm really excited about an upcoming trip to Disney World (Food and Wine Festival!!)- I also know that that's probably going to be the only time (about a week) where I'm not constantly running around or studying.

I've been studying a lot through my Knewton course, I've been writing and re-editing my essays (I'm pretty sure one is finished, one is close and the other one is stressing me. The GMAT studying is intense too. I've taken to reading this forum and exploring other resources that look into the application process (EssaySnark - I'm looking at you.) Sites like these allow me to continue my learning experience into the whole process without draining my brain from constant quantitative drills or sentence correction sets.

I've also resurrected my website! I'm an autograph collector and used to have a website dedicated to this (I started it probably when I was 13 or so and it was around uninterrupted for about 12 years- crazy!). I took it down to devote more time to other things but ended up missing it. So I found a quicker way to update it and brought it back. I started a blog on there too. Check it out if you get a chance - www.ryanjw.com

At this point I'm on section 5 in Knewton and currently stuck on some of the extra quant material in that section - I'm not satisfied with my progress on those specific concepts so I'm going to drill them down before moving on. I'm looking at a mid-October test date, but perhaps earlier depending on when I finish/how confident I feel.

So I finally made it through section 6 which means I hit my second CAT- I feel like I'll be revisiting this section as it really helped me a ton. I've had a bunch of books and I've taken another online course before, but Knewton is really the first one where I feel like I keep a good portion of the stuff I learn and I was hoping to see an increase from the 550/560's I've been seeing since I've started.

(36Q/39V) 610!

Quant - My 36 in quant was just about unchanged from my last go around. I noticed a lot here. First off, I REALLY need to work on timing. I had a really bad start here, too. 1 right, 4 wrong. I got my stuff together after that and swung 14 in a row. After those, the clock started getting the better of me, I got KILLED toward the end because of poor time management. This is something I'll really be working on in the next few weeks. But, what was good to know was that if I found some way to get these done quicker, I'll likely get a higher score as most of my incorrect answers came during the time crunch at the end.

Verbal - I'm getting extremely satisfied with verbal. I don't want to get comfortable but I'm feeling like I can get even better at verbal and bring it up to even a 45. I had extremely boring passages and got through them all with only 2 wrong. SC presented the biggest opportunity for improvement here with 4 incorrect. CR I only got two wrong.

This might not be the best way to approach, but I'm using # wrong as an indicator because, alongside the course itself, I like to see what question types (regardless of difficulty level) I'm most comfortable with. It's obvious to me that I can improve in all areas, but SC may need a lot of my attention.

I also noticed, in the verbal section, I had a tough time getting on a roll. I was very sporadic in correct/incorrect answers. While I had less incorrect overall in this section, and had ample time to finish (had 9 minutes to spare at the end)- I guess I couldn't get into a groove here.

I was going to take a break and play video games tonight (it's been so long since I've played my PS3) but the night got away from me, as I'm sure you're all familiar with. Tomorrow I'm hitting the Phillies game and will definitely be doing some thing other than study all night! I need a day off.

I'll post my actual debrief tomorrow evening. I'm taking it at 4pm tomorrow and am beyond nervous.

But I wanted to give anyone who read these original posts an update. I stopped continually updating it just because I got so busy with work, studying and working on applications but I went through the entire Knewton program as well as some additional materials and here is my progress:

Knewton Tests:
Diagnostic - 37Q 31V - 560
1 - 36Q 39V - 610
2 - 40Q 35V - 610
3 - 36Q 38V - 600
4 - 34Q 33V - 550
5 - 33Q 35V - 560

Manhattan GMAT Quant Sets (I took the GMAT but only went through the Quant sections as I was more concerned about my improvement in that section)

39Q
40Q

GMATPrep Tests

43Q 33V - 620
42Q 38V - 660

I did not notice any type of improvement on my actual Knewton tests. These tests gave me a good framework of what to study and a good idea of what I was (and wasn't good at) so I knew what to study and what I was able to spend less time studying. My quant ranged from 33-40 and my verbal ranged from 31-39. My Knewton tests weren't taken in an ideal environment. I find it difficult to mimic the exact environment of the test center as I need something going on in the background most of the time. I did, however, take the test in relative silence for my MGMAT Quant #2 set and for both GMATPrep sets.

So I'm taking the test tomorrow. Based on how different my scores have been I'm really nervous. I'm a little relieved that I hit my goal on both GMAT tests (would not be disappointed with a 620 but would be ecstatic with a 660 or better). I've also noticed a huge improvement on my quant score and my verbal hasn't improved much. I'll likely spend the rest of my prep time on CR questions as I believe I can do better on those than I have been.

Official GMAT score - 41Q 40V (660)!

Incredibly pleased with my results, a 110 point jump is something I'm very proud of.

Thanks for providing this site as a valuable resource :)
